Okay just for @Kevinthedog I worked as a transport manager for a big window company. While I was doing that they sent me off on a government course to study structural engineering. After I part qualified I did five more years for them before heading off down safff to earn my fortune running my own company. That went boobs up when someone went bust on me for loadsa manny. I paid my way out of that and ended up skint and got a job lorry driving. In the meantime I bought and did up houses to rent out, which lead on to me becoming a builder for ten years. Then on a whim I sold the company and became a lorry driver again. I now own only a few properties and work nights driving lorries.
Nomadic Engineer. I served my time as a car mechanic in a Ford dealership, then moved on to MAN trucks. Left that to become a lecturer at the local College which I thought would be a good move, but hated it . Then took a leap of faith and I joined the RAF as a Eng Tech Propulsion which mainly involved building the Rolls-Royce engines for Tornado F3 and GR4 fast jets. Had a whale of a time, but not family friendly as kids started appearing . So the next career swerve was leaving the RAF to become an engineer for an insurance company, carrying out statutory examinations on lifting machines (cranes) and pressure vessels. I did this for 8 years, enjoyable mostly, really got to see inside a lot of different industries (especially distilleries!) and was a homeworker, which was nice. Now I am a reliability engineer for a utility company, mostly specialising in Wind Turbine drivetrains with a smattering of Hydro. My office usually looks like this... I climb a lot of ladders!
Been an estate agent for 20 years now (Bring it on) Now I manage a branch in the upper end of the market and have done for the last 6 years, selling some absolute fantastic homes for some great people, at weekend's i'm just a hippy's son in a Dakota Beige bus.
For 7yrs I was an underground mining mechanic and loved it but the collieries around these parts were closing so 28 1/2yrs ago I took on a role that most people I have met despise and pre-judge me for and that I have grown to hate for the last 12yrs. However in 97 days I retire from that role and become a member of the public again and may.......just may take on another job. But it will not involve shifts, will not involve working weekends and most definitely will not involve me interacting with the general public again.
I've been a whole time firefighter for just over 27 years and do a bit of tiling as a fiddle.....even though my pension has been smashed to bits by the tories, I'm getting a bit apprehensive about my approaching retirement.....I'm institutionalised!!
