Spare wheel on the front!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Dicky, Dec 12, 2016.

  1. I prefer it on the front as it frees up loads of room and with the right cover looks better than the white badge I think. Bracket was less than £20 new but never needed to use it yet (touchwood)

  2. I think they look cool on the front. I know this is not how VW did it but it looks traditional now. Ever seen a tea towel/tee-shirt pic without the wheel on the front?

  7. I suppose it could be fitted to the deformation panel if a couple of rivnuts were put in. Atleast you'd be able to remove the bumper on its own.

I'm still planning on making one of these for ours when I get onto it.

I hated mine on the front panel. I never had to remove the bolts to get it off though, they had rotted through.

In the wheel well where it was meant to go.

  12. Put it in the wheel well and make your partner sleep that side!

  14. Think I've seen them on eBay for about forty quid
You would probably want to weld in some captive nuts in where it mounts to the bumper

Mine is on the front attached to a small bracket in the middle where it is staying. There is a mains inverter where the spare wheel used to go.
If the spare wheel bracket had any direct attachment to the deformation panel, the deformation panel would probably drop off, especially with water running down the bracket and into the panel.

Is that a bit of an ask. To put a heavy vehicle on a little rubber band and expect it not to pop off ?

  19. Depends where you sit on the looks/practicality axis. Ours has always been on the front and I've not given it thought. It's not in the way of anything except the wind. Would like to lose the cover and if I ever get the wheels done I will. We don't have a spare in our family car but don't get me started on that...
