So I've always considered the gear shift in Clem to be reasonably okay... at some point a new front shift rod was going to be necessary as there is a bit of play in the stick when in gear (but I do know a small bit of movement at the bottom translates to a whopping movement at the top with a stock gear lever), but a way down the list of more important matters to be addressed. Sadly on driving home from work, I fear it may have jumped the queue somewhat. I now have huge arc-like movement in my gear lever when in gear, and the stick could quite happily rotate too if I wanted. With careful gear changing, it's still possible to locate all the forward gears (not tried reverse yet), and I got home okay..... So has the gear linkage gone do you think? Or whatever it is properly known as? Any info / help / ideas on what to look at would be gratefully received. I've got a long day at work tomorrow, a funeral on Friday, and work again on Sunday, so I'm not going to get much of a chance to look at it quickly, but any helpful thoughts in advance would be fab. The pin in the ball at the bottom of the stick has gone or the slot has worn Take the stick out and post a pic
check underneath the cab floor that the bolt that should have a wire through to secure, hasn't come loose
Okay, sorry for the delay (after work parent visiting as they are looking after my dog) I've got the rubber carpet stuff up and the cab floor looms large in front of me. If I start removing gear sticks (those 2 big bolts are the starting point I assume?) am I going to do irreversable things and not be able to move the van at all until it's repaired? Or can I just look, photograph, and put it back together? I know it's broke and needs fixing, but at the mo I could most likely drive it to a fixing type person if it's beyond me. Sorry, just nerves that I will break it further!!
I reckon it's a perished gear box coupling. Replace it anyway whilst your obviously going to have to go through the whole linkage.
Okay it's in bits, and I think it looks like I have one of those quick shift things (although I could be wrong and I certainly didn't know I had one if it is).... I really hope I'm going to be able to put this back together....
okay so that last photo... the pin thing that goes through the end - there's a spring, but I could take the whole pin out if I wanted... should that be able to happen? or have I lost a bit and that's why its not engaging with the slot all the time?
No the spring and pin is held in once it is pushed into the cup under the floor. The pin then sticks out and engages in the slot. Put it all back together and see what is like, then go to the front of the gearbox and see what the coupling is like
Ah well, I'm usually game for anything but sadly this one hasn't worked out. If it wasn't f**ked before, it is now. If there's anyone on the forum in my area (New Forest / Salisbury / Southampton / Bournemouth) who would be willing to come out and help at some point, I'd really appreciate it please. I couldn't get the ball back in the socket, maybe I should have put it in 1st gear for easy access or something, but I didn't know) and now the pin from the bottom of the gear lever has fallen out and I can't find it anywhere. If I can't find it in daylight do I need to try and buy a new gear lever now? It's RHD so I guess this won't be easy. Feeling very dejected.
Hindsight is a sod. I took my engine out to remove the gear box as I was having a selection problem, second and reverse, only to discover that when I came to disconnect the gearbox coupling I realised that it was shot... Replaced it and all was well after that. These buses keep you on your toes don't drop your guard.
Ah thank you, that would be very kind. I've put it back together (much easier without that trifling little pin getting in the way) so at least I can move it into a more easily accessible gear for when I try again (!!).
@scrooge95 I see you have a quick shift kit. That's the big spacer and should also have a mushroom shape spacer slipped on the shaft under the cover. Slide the cover up and see if it's still there. Did you have to press down to get a gear?
