I know. I even did all this whilst she's out working down the pub this evening just so she has someone to look after whilst she's on board.
Nope, & how dare you diss me switch! It's a nice rubber coated on/off number that I consider to be an upgrade to the muck trap OG turny thing
The last couple of months have seen lot of camping but more importantly for this thread a couple of improvements. Firstly, electric washers to remove the guess & stress from MOT time. Secondly, electronic ignition. No biggie I know for all of those who have had it years, but for this old fart it's a tentative step into the unknown. For the 2.0 FI Type IV with a 205S SVDA I went for the Pertronix 1847V kit. When it breaks I shall try the Accuspark one! Dead simple to fit, the best method is for sure to remove the distributor by undoing the 13mm nut on the case stud. It's then a simple case of removing points & condensor, loosely bolting down the sender plate in the kit, feeding the wires through the side of the dissy & fitting the magnet over the shaft. It all goes back in & red is connected to terminal 15 of the coil, black to terminal 1. I'm daft so I have tippex'd the coil so I can't get it wrong, especially as there are a couple of incorrectly colour coded connectors on the coil. Coil marked! Then the new toy came out, alongside the trusty timing gun. This tacho is the best 8 quid I've spent on ebay for a while. It comes with reflective strips (but no battery, it's a 9V rectangular one) & has a high & low memory function. The tool was ideal for setting 7.5' BTDC at idle of 900 RPM..... ....and the most important one of 28'BTDC at 3000-3500 RPM. & finally, yes I have kept the old hardware in the bus just in case.....
There you go fellas... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/121947924259?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT and in typical busmonkey style, here's a link to the you tube vid that convinced me it wasn't just a bit of Chinese tat, but a fairly accurate bit of Chinese tat..
Sorry to be a muppet but did you use this in place of the timing gun or alongside it? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Alongside the gun. Timing gun for advance/retard, tacho for RPM @davidoft has got a very fancy Snap-on combined tacho/timing gun but as I'm a mere mortal & can't justify the several billion £'s these cost I've gone down the cheap & cheerful route
Thanks, I have a timing gun that works fine but like you couldn't run to the tacho counter. Cool stuff and on £8 Bargain ! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I like eating tacos! Good to see an update from @theBusmonkey, glad to see you have been camping plenty - can you do some more trip reports please?
Mine is meant to do rpm but it doesn't work correctly, cheap Chinese crap I guess. Haven't tried the dwell feature as I have leccy points and I don't think dwell works on them does it?
Yeah, Ratwell discusses the setting of the pertronix. He reckons it's OK to run with as large a gap as possible thus increasing the dwell to 53/54. I just went for the standard setting with the little bit of plastic supplied in the kit but may try running a wide gap with as much dwell as possible as the theory is because it's all electronic there is no points bounce.
