Has anyone had much experience towing caravans / heavy trailers with your T2? The reason i ask is, we have just bought a vintage Thomson Glen caravan which weighs around 600kg and Im worried about towing it with the van. Ive checked the towbar and it feels solid but it still bothers me. I know it will slow me down a little more and im confident the engine is strong enough to cope, but have I over looked anything or should i avoid like the plague? Cheers.
Cool. It is braked and behind my Q3 it tows lovely but will have to be gentle with the van until i gain some confidence I guess.
Sweet. Here is the little van. The drive away awning sits on the side nice She's a 1971 Thomson Glen 4. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
itll be fine, i tow our puck which weighs about 750 when loaded and although it can be a little slow its fine.
i took about 1.5 tonnes of soil in my old trailer to the tip not bother. kangaroo'ed a bit on bumpy roads and didn't like hill starts but was fine.
Ive taken them around the block and im really not confident the towbar is strong enough. The van seemed to pull it lovely but dont fancy the towbar failing along the M1/M6/M5. Of the four bolts, holding the towbar/bumper up onto the chassis rail, only 3 of them are doing up tight. The fourth seems to have a dodgy nut. They look like captive ones as they are inside the chassis rail. I can see a small hole but not sure how i can use this to get a new bolt through as its a bit further back towards the rear. Has anyone else had this sort of issue and how did you fix it? Replace captive nuts / Weld the two together forever / Drill all the way through into engine compartment and then use a few long bolts Any other options?
I bolted straight through into the engine bay. Threaded rod and a couple of nuts. I didn't fancy cutting into the chassis rail after I'd finished painting and didn't know the nut was stripped until after paint.
I reckon the weight to tow vehicle could have got you in doo doo if you had been pulled Dunc. Great pic though. I would like that as a jigsaw puzzle
Probably but I did pass a police car with the other bus on the trailer and it had a full cover over it, not sure whether that made it look more professional or more dodgy they weren't interested tho, was only about 15 miles x2 and I'm not planning on doing it again!
I towed this heap out of a field ,lost a wheel as well caravans I ate em... In the old days , I towed a T25 with a T25... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Well I tried towing the caravan yesterday and it did not go well. The engine overheated very quickly. Loss of power and some backfires. Not good. I'm not gonna chance taking to skegvegas now. Van and awning only. Such a shame. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It's a 1600 tp. It's a great engine and I wasn't expecting it to struggle. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
