Good shout Si, but if I was @Popsy with an unknown engine, I'd still check for hydraulic lifters.
Dead easy, GE/hydraulic lifter engines use steel tipped push rods.

Non-hydraulic engine push rods are aluminium.

The steel ones will be attracted to a magnet!

If they are steel, adjustment (with valve in position relative to TDC etc etc) is wind rocker down onto valve very carefully until it is just touching, then 1.5 more turns of the screw down to pre-load the tappet (lifter).

    ATB:thumbsup:

  5. Where abouts on the fan cowling is the engine number on a type 4 , maybe valve clearances are not as straight forward as I thought ! , might just put cover back on with new gasket and wait until the weekend!

Thank you everyone for the kind words and support, I feel a lot happier than I did at 7.30 this morning when I realised I wasn't going to have a nice cruise to work in the van.
And if I have to get to techenders on the big yellow taxi, then so be it!
Also thank you hugely in advance for the offers of help and loan parts when I get there too. It is really nice to feel part of the big lovely TLB extended family!

  11. I have read and re-read Diddymen's excellent How To on electrics and using a multimeter but have an issue that I just don't understand. The bulb is fine, 12V is getting to it and there is continuity between the positive and the earth with the bulb in place. So why won't the bulb light up? This is one for Techenders - hoping somebody will be able to put me out of my misery. I will bring the multimeter and a 12V probe and beer for the caped crusader or anybody else who can explain it to me.
