As per @pkrboo. Make sure it's seated properly all round as they have a habit of kinking inwards just as you offer them up.
VW logo upside down on covers on Type IV motors isn't it...?

  3. Was going to wait until I had things fully sorted but here's the issue - it has now run but - there is a mystery some wires were not connected although they were near their appointed place, some were connected to the wrong place an some missing altogether. I want to check everything again before I do the distance to T/E!!

The only conclusion we could come to is that they may have been some tampering, can't prove anything nor am I going to try to take anything further - will get things running properly and find a
lock for the engine lid !!!!

  4. Great news, which wires? can you do pics? do you think someone has been in and fiddled while it was on the driveway?

My main concern at the moment is whether you've ordered enough pork for Saturday:eek:

  6. Yes sorry it is a type 4
Haynes is saying different size gap on exhaust depending if it after a certain chassis number , mine has had a replacement engine so not sure which size gap to use

  7. Dry or a tiny bit of oil to hold it in place works for me every time

PS if it works for you, you can check and advise me on my valve clearances as I always cock them up...

  10. Yep - that was our thought - I had not opened the lid between parking up and trying to start 3 weeks later.

The wires were, fuel pump live being connected to permanent live, the coil having live and neg. turned around and the coil feed to the black box disconnected altogether. The live feed to the coil was "broken" down near the join to the main loom and there were 2 bare wires wrapped together near the fuel pump live which I admit I didn't understand!!

So the sparky and I want to go through everything before I drive any distance - booked him for next week !
    Cheers B

  11. Both the same according to Bentley, or maybe that's what I've been doing wrong!
Nope, the sticker is only 1 gap size

Reference the clearance via the engine number stamped just in front of the distributor.
