My big mouth has landed me with a challenge I really didn't think through very well. But I'm stubborn and won't back down now. So, I accidently suggested to a couple of friends we should take part in a mini tough mudder event this May. It's a 5 mile slog through a load of muddy obstacles with a team to help each other make it to the finish. They caught me off guard and agreed to sign up, whoops. Those of you who've met me will know I'm pretty unfit and eat way too much. So now I've got until May to get myself into a shape less like a potato so I don't let them down. Any top tips?
They're less unfit than I am. We've been going to a gym class together once a week for the last year, it was my big mouth that got me accidently involved in that too. Seems I don't learn Last week I decided we should try circuit training, I almost puked 10 mins in. They got to laugh at me.
Thank you I quite enjoy it when I get there (not circuit training), it's just finding the enthusiasm to get going I struggle with. I meant to go out on my push bike while I had some time off over Christmas, that never happened
You have to find something you like doing. I liked running. Being a simple man, just going a bit further every day, then faster and starting the home sprint (stop laughing) a bit sooner was enough. Up and down the hills of sheffield. 2 1/2 miles in the morning, 5 miles in the evening. The first time I went I couldn't manage to sprint from the last lamp post. after a few months i was sprinting 1/4 mile. It seems like a distant dream now. I've ordered some boots and I'm going hill walking. I keep saying that but this time i mean it. lol
I like bike riding, used to commute to work when I sat behind a desk all day, it was easy to get the miles in then. Maybe I could do that again on some dry days, easier when it's serving a travelling need too. I think it's about 7 or 8 miles each way. I like swimming too. I don't like running at all. Enjoy your hill walking
Try joining something like regiment fitness or British military fitness. I've done RF for 6 months and the other day accidentally went for a run. Found it pretty easy going actually and went home and mapped it, 5.13 miles. Pretty good for my first ever run. I think RF helped me be able to do that as I couldn't have done that last year. RF OR BMF help with all body strength upper/lower so should be good for your mud challenge. Good luck!
Brilliant you'll love it, I've done 2 tough mudder and will be going for a third this year, they're great fun. You don't need to be able to run 5 miles in one go, the obstacles give you a breather and a laugh Doing it as a team will get you round, do you get the Ice Enema and the electrocution on a mini?
Good to hear some first had experiences I think they cut out the really tough obstacles for this one and seems to have the emphasis on the muddyness. Any idea what fitness level I could do with finding? I don't want to struggle so much I can't enjoy it
How many obstacles are there and how many people take part? Full mudder is 13 miles with 18 obstacles so the longest run was about a mile, there was 4800 people doing it on the day set off in blocks of 200 every 15 mins so there was queues at the bigger obstacles especially the deep mud stuff which is slow going. First year took us about 4 hours with a team of 10.
Everest will be the hardest of the obstacles, big 1/4 pipe thing you have to run up and grab your friends hands to pull you up the last bit
