The rear top shock mount on the lhs is loose, I can wiggle it about with my hand. can anyone tell me how these work or is there a diagram of their construction anywhere? I have searched Google but it's all a bit general.
is it the shock that's moving or the mount, the rubbers fail in the ends of the shocks, 2 bolts hold them on cant remember the top one I think it goes straight through the chassis
I think from memory that the bolt was spinning in the hole. But I will have another look at it just to be sure. Brb.
Captive nut. Or rather one of those square ones welded in place. That's been loose a long time. Compare it to the other side, hopefully that'll be as it should be.
i think i did, and tried winding it up, and just went outside just now and tried again to make sure i actually remember correctly and yes just spinning. will take the wheel off again tomorrow and have a look properly. @zed the other side of that mounting point, ie the welded/nut is likely to be where? Petrol tank side?
the fixing point is obviously buggered, if its been loose, its been loose for a long time, and the bolt will be seized no doubt or non existent. I will dismantle tomorrow and see. Need to replace those shocks anyway so those shocks will be sorted.
from where? Hole in chassis/something similar? cant find much info. this is all i can find that has any remote detail. i guess i will have to investigate further tomorrow/tuesday
Hmm earlier ones might have been more accessable - or later ones - I've def held one with an open ended spanner and had me fingers on 'em.
Well there is hope for getting it off, but what about remounting? Am i going to have to weld a new nut on there somehow? I know it is speculative but i like to be at least slightly clued up before my bus is on axle stands again. so that i can think ahead.
The loose one I had - what can you do? As you've noticed it's not easy to get it. Pull on the bolt while trying it in different locations. Mine "fitted" in one place. So once I had the bolt out I reused the nut, then located it where it was happy before finally tightening. Not great but it hadn't been bangng about for years like yours obviously has.
I did all that from the wheel arch. Didn't remove anything else. I remember well going through your thought process and being very relieved to have "got away with it", as in easy fix.
If it is spinning you need to unscrew and wedge the shock so you are pulling as well... Me I would grind it off...
