Your thoughts on MOT exemption

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by satans_creation, Mar 6, 2019.

  1. I have 2 cars that are MOT exempt, my camper which has just turned 40 and my beetle which is 60 years young.

I haven't tested my beetle as its still 6v and has semaphore indicators, It's rarely used and I dont really see the point in testing it....

My camper on the other hand is going to get lots of use this year. My brother is an MOT tester and he says not to bother testing camper either but I disagree

If you disagree with your brother get it MOTd

  3. I agree, i think it's personal preference. I've just had my bug mot'd as i feel some security in knowing that it's been properly tested. When the bus is sorted, i'll be getting the mot done on that too (both mot exempt) for peace of mind.

I absolutely trust my mechanic and if he had the testing kit of an mot station then i would be happy for him to give me the nod that all was ok, but he doesn't have.

  4. That's stating the obvious lol

Trouble is point of view, I did an experiment with a friend a while back with a classic mini

Tested it at 3 locations with 3 different testers, one passed the car with minor advisories, 2nd failed it on something minor and was retested and passed and the 3rd said the car was a death trap and failed spectactularly

My dad is a member of the Austin 7 club, he’s got 3 all made in the 20s, I’ve been to many of their meetings and not once have I heard any member mention an MOT

  6. My bus is exempt.... However, it should be going in for its MOT this weekend. I appreciate I don't have to, but I don't have a brake roller or a suitable way of checking all the ball joints etc.

It may only be a piece of paper, but in the event of an incident or roadside inspection that could be the difference between being fined (or worse) or having evidence that I've taken reasonable steps to ensure my bus is roadworthy.

  9. Might want to check your recovery company as the AA stipulate it has to have an Mot.

  10. Probably so , but if the AA mechanic does a check he`ll find it`s exempt - all he needs to know really ...

I`m not commenting on this subject anymore as its been done to death :D

  13. My Brazzer passed it's MOT today, but being a 2003 it's got until 2043 to wait for exemption....tax is £255......

I wouldn't be going anywhere near an MOT station if I didn't need to.

  14. I'm still MOT'ing mine, but how do I declare it MOT exempt

It was already tax free and when I renewed my tax online, I didn't get the option to declare it MOT exempt

Anyone know how to do it in my situation?

  15. There's a declaration form on the DVLA site, fill it in and take it to your friendly local post office with the Log Book and they'll submit it to Swansea.

  16. I spoke to dvla and they told me to take the form when your tax is up for renewal (pain as i do mine online). Mine's not due for renewal until september but the big red banner on the 'check your vehicle is mot'd' website worried me. Dvla assured me that the system will be updated in september but not to submit the form before then as it 'confuses things'.

Why then did they relay my dad back from Derby last year?? Unless they’ve changed it this year, and why would they not take a perfectly legal van MOT exempt is legal so what would their case be, I’ve just insured my camper I told them it was mot exempt they said no problem

  18. According to the DVLA site:

You do not have to apply to stop getting an MOT for your vehicle each year. However, you must still keep it in a roadworthy condition.

I think the v112 is only if you need to tax at a post office for some reason. My tax renewal simply said "this vehicle *may* require an appropriate test". The golf renewal said "this vehicle needs an appropriate mot test certificate"

  19. Also found the text below, sounds like you only need the form if it's the first time you are tax exempt:

A list of exempt types of vehicles is on the MOT exemption form (V112). You need to fill in the form if your vehicle is listed so that you can either tax it or apply for tax exemption.

Sorry that is incorrect , I did mine on Monday, you fill out a V112, hand it to the post office clerk, he or she looks at it, ticks the box that they’ve seen it, stamps the form and sends the form off, she handed me back the V112 and said next year the reminder form will be undated to show it is mot exempt
