Yet another electrical mystery (misery)

  1. Indicators !

I am feeling very please that having worked out that the PO had the steering wheel on upside down and the mechanism too far down the column, the indicators now self cancel; Hurrah! :D

However, the drivers side (RHD) indicators have a tendency to double flash. :(

Yes, I've checked and cleaned all the earths and I will check them again BUT why would turning the steering wheel make a difference?

Working perfect, turn the wheel it double flashes or double flashing turn the wheel it stops????????

    Am I missing something?

  2. I didn't realise you could put the steering wheel on upside down! must have looked very odd! Cant get my head around the double flashing bit without a wiring diagram but have you checked to see whether, when it does this they are both operating or when it "double flashes" is on not working?

It's got to be a bad connection if it only does it when the wheel is turned try wiggling the wires as they go up behind the column.

Check the bulb contacts are clean as well as the connections on the hazard switch

  5. Yeah, I couldn't reach underneath to use the horn! All fixed now. :p

  6. Next time it does it I'll jump out and have a look.

So watch out for a camper stopping suddenly on a roundabout with the driver leaping out shouting "DON'T TOUCH THAT STEERING WHEEL" :D

  7. Cheers @matty I've looked at the wiring when I changed the indicator stalk, all looked good. It did it before I changed it too.

What I don't get is; the earth is the other side of the bulbs, if the 12v feed is disrupted wouldn't they just stop working altogether?

Having thought of this further, I suppose it's because only one (front or back) circuit is being interupted

  8. What do you mean by double-flashing?

  9. flashing fast, the same as when a bulb is out.

    Is a bulb out?
    :D

  11. Implies either a bulb really is duff, or your got a dodgy contact somewhere in your indicator witing.

  12. I'm going to change the bulbs over and see what happens. If it moves to the left hand side, new bulbs. Still can't see what turning the steering wheel does. Must be a continuity thing!

Turning the steering wheel slightly shifts the wiring loom around the crumple bar assembly that goes to the front bulkhead. Probably a loose connnection or frayed insulation touching metal.

On my bus it flexes several mm as you heave on the wheel.

  14. Oh how I laughed, and laughed :D:D

Turning the steering wheel has nothing to do with the indicator double flashing, it was only because when I was turning the steering I was also braking

Yes you guessed it, there's a short somewhere between the brake lights and indicator on that side.

Had me stumped for a bit tuesday_wildchild
