Hi all - been offered a 1914cc engine which is currently in a bay - would this drop straight into my 64 spliity or would there be mods required? thanks
Would that then make it a bay? ie if you put a Splitty bodyshell around a bay engine? I dont know the answer - sorry. Im guessing yes though
if it's a lawnmover type engine then yes, if it's a type 4 engine then no as the engine bay metal work is quite a bit different.
1914cc? Is it a T1 upright engine or flat? You will need to convert the van from 6v to 12v for a start. Not sure about gearboxes though, think yours will be a 1200 gearbox so that might need swopping and maybe additional cooling air intake ? Ignoring all this , a 1914cc engine will probably shred the reduction boxes, you will need uprated brakes and no doubt other stuff! Try to get a single port 1500 if you want a bit more go and keep it original stylie? The engine might be fab but I really doubt it will be reliable enough and just burn itself from overheating? Sorry dont want to put a dampner on it but splits were never designed for that kind of power?
Theres some Splits over on SSVC with really serious motors fitted incuding type 1, type 4, Scooby and Porsche..dunno about reliability though, but the build threads are informative!
Most haven't just done an engine swap though, mate of mine runs a 2.4l type 4 powered samba with IRS conversion.
Ill give you that!! I guess the point I was trying to get across is do dome research first & see what it entails! A mate of mine runs an 1835 in his split, would it be a 1303 beetle box (?) with the reduction boxes removed & straight axle conversion. That drives absolutely superbly!
Different ways of doing it, that is one way. I don't like the conversions as they loose originality, but they do drive so much better afterwards. I'd agree on doing research, then do some more.
My bus already has beetle IRS and i've got some disc brakes going on so all ok mechanically, just needing a more powerful engine.
