http://crimebodge.com/more-british-police-officers-die-at-their-desks-than-on-the-streets/ Not my opinion but surprising reading.
Not really surprising considering the health of the nation. I for one should take note. Sitting on my backside all day isnt great
I believe it. When I retired I counted about 16 colleges that I would have invited to my retirement do but died under the age of 50. 2 from brain tumours 1 from alcohol related illness 4 from heart attacks 4 from suicide (1 whilst on duty) 1 murdered on duty.. I can't remember how the others died. Grim statistics really.
I do think that 'by their own negligence' is carp as they were trying to do their duty and sh!t happens in dangerous situations.
Amazing amount of inactivity in our society today. My job is sitting down and I don't think it does me any good at all!
Fat lazzy doughnut eating fag smoking beer drinking good old plod. Have not those with the clever stuff upstairs just rule there should be a annual fit test?
Don't think you have a choice about the sat sitting bit of your work but one could rip the power unit out and put some peddling peddles in if you wish for a healthier ride.
Not dangerous my bum My mate has chased, fought and arrested a lad and when searched he had a live ww2 hand grenade in his pocket. Arrested drug addicts so high they continue to try to hit people with hammers even though both arms are broken and visibly look like haribo worms. These are just a few It is a dangerous job. Rules mean they avoid many of the risks but inevitably they will be exposed at some point
A fitness test is being introduced but the cops have to get fit in their own time unlike the military and the fire brigade. There is no support from the organisation. Even as a firearms officer and being a level 1 riot officer there was uproar because we wanted to go for a training run in the firms time. Sounds easy but after a 12 hour shift without meal breaks all you want to do is crash out or hang out with the family. Now where did I put that donut?
The fitness test is gonna be a joke, anyone who can walk in a straight line for ten minutes will pass it so please don't compare being a cop with being in the military it's offensive, except to those ex military who left for a cushty job in the police, where they will have put weight on and become self serving lazy fat useless cops
It was up to us to keep our fitness up to standard in our own time when in the forces The only time pt was compulsory was during the basic and trade training at the start of service
Nearly spat my kebab out at that one but fortunately had the computer wedged in my double chin. To be fair, I've had better rants and insults from drunken 14 year olds. I apologize and stand corrected.
It must just be the fire fighters i've met then. The FBU are having a battle over fitness to perform duties up to 60 years of age. I really do wish you all the best of luck.
i know mate. whole time firefighters get time to do PT as part of their role map. in a retained, or part time ff's role map the onus is placed upon the individual to maintain their physical fitness, i have my 3 yearly medical/physical in october, best get the bike out lol
Not wanting to fan the flames but you should have tried keeping fit on an RN warship, back in the 80s/90s amounted to one/couple of exercise bikes between 200 or a run round the upper deck 7 or 8 laps for a mile, and during own time not during working hours … would have loved to have hung out with the family but they were somewhere a long way away.
No probes mate. Always good to learn. Out of interest, what age does the average sailor / soldier have to be when they have to retire?
As far as I recall from when my father was in the fire service they (some) spent their down time( between duties) keeping fit by playing volley, ping pong or pacman. Other stations may of had different fitness programs.
No idea on average retirement age … I left in '94 in my early 30s. That was also before the days of sailors having to do an annual fitness test, so they might even get some 'work' time nowadays (although probably only if shoreside) to do exercise. Who knows not me!
