Worn tyre(s)?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by robyip, Jul 13, 2012.

  1. Hi Folks,

I've only come across tyre wear on cars and generally they have worn quite evenly across the tyre.

    Anyway, my questions are

    1. Is it safe and I can ignore the front driver tyre wear until the whole tyre is worn?
    2. Should I just change the front driver tyre and the wear is normal
    3. Should I change the front drivers side tyre and get the front wheels aligned?
    4. Should I change the both front tyres as the passenger side seems to be starting to wear thin on the inside edge too and get

    See pics below.

Your thoughts and advice are appreciated.

get your front end checked for wear and get the tracking done, those tyres look just about legal

  3. I'm not 100% on this, but I believe you must have visible tread across the whole tyre. 3 points for each illegal tyre. I'd swap it . :)

New front tyres and tracking Rob, it'll drive much better as well as being legal.

  9. Try to find a Volkswagen friendly shop, not just with newer VW's --how the shock absorbers?(not sure what you call them other there?)
It looks like your camber is off on the front end causing your tires (tyres) to wear unevenly, Below is some information stolen off the internet, might give you some insite what's taking place under your bus---chuck

    ========================================================[/glow]
Camber is the tilting of the wheels from the vertical when viewed from the front of the vehicle. When the wheels tilt outward at the top, the camber is positive (+). When the wheel tilts inward at the top, the camber is negative (-). The amount of tilt is measured in degrees from the vertical. Camber settings influence the directional control and the tire wear.

Too much positive camber will result in premature wear on the outside of the tire and cause excessive wear on the suspension parts.

Too much negative camber will result in premature wear on the inside of the tire and cause excessive wear on the suspension parts.

  10. It's more likely your toe-in's wrong, which is scrubbing a band on the edge of the tyres.

Worth checking your tyres anyway, as I'm sure a lot of vans are driving around on ancient rubberware. I had the whole sidewall of a tyre collapse...

  11. i thought about toe in also, maybe a 'curb shot or a large pot/chug hole knocked it out wack?-chuck

  12. get your camber checked

tracking would scrub both front tyres

have you had a ball joint replaced recently ?

  14. We've had the van 3 years and never had a problem with the wheels/tyres and we've not changed it in that time!

We do live Sheffield, officially the city/town with the worst roads and lots of pot hole!

I will try and book van in with our mechanic to look at camber on front. He's a busy chap.

    Thanks for all your help.

  15. In case our man says he can't do camber. Can anyone recommend someone in or near Sheffield?

    Thanks,

    Rob

  17. Most tyre fitting places will do tracking (alignment or toe in) doesn't matter on the vehicle as its all the same. You could get full four wheel alignment but will cost between £60-£90 I know ATS Euromaster does it.

  18. you might be better off going to a garage where there is a old boy about

i have found most younger tyre fitters get stuck with a steering box and no track rods to adjust

    Check the bearings as well

  20. Our VW mechanic is going to check the camber, brakes and loosen everything so the rally car tyre people he uses can do the alignment and new tyre if need be. Phew! It should drive a lot better once all is this done!

    :)
