Working out electrics/heating

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Louise, Oct 10, 2019.

  1. I have a leisure battery & heating installed in the van... no idea how to use any of them as the guy never showed me. My fault for not asking at the time but I focused on other questions!
How do I work out what’s what? I lifted the rock & roll bed to find a sea of wires. I don’t know where to start.

  2. Just cover it back up again. And forget it never existed.Maybe a memorial plaque as well.;)

If it helps the round thing at the top is a speaker. Dunno if it’ll work looking at that mess though.
Oh and there’s a fuse box languishing lazily at the other side but it looks, well, retired.

I think you’ve got mice too. They love a bit of wiring they do.
If you shut the lid on it as suggested I’ll wager half that mess of wiring will disappear too. Just like it never existed.

P.s. I have a Propex heater in mine. Haven’t used it in years, I just wear more clothes and use a thicker sleeping bag with a few fleecy blankets.
I must get around to checking that out too.

  4. get your miss marple cape on, it's time to do the tracing back to source.

or get an auto-electrician like i did who just added to the spaghetti but made everything work! :D

If you can get that speaker to generate heat -boy your on a winner

  6. The Webasto is a great heater, very welcome in a notoriously cold air cooled camper!

But the wiring looks a mess of a bad DIY job. I'd strongly suggest getting the entire system checked over before safely using it.

  7. Get a wiring diagram for the heater.. .. can't need that many... earth , power and signal to turn on?... sort out the ones you need make them shorter if you want, then tape them together

Where do you live? If not too far from me I’ve got some side cutters and a hammer - should be able to sort that lot out

  10. my suggestion would be to remove anything related to the big speaker system as it's a lower priority (not essential?) and see what's left. that shoudl take away at least some of the mess of wires and allow you to see what remains.

then trace the wires that are connected to the heater - expect you'd need something connecting up to a power source (maybe via the fuse box) and some sort of switch? that should give you a clue how to get it working? maybe research the webasto heater (see if you can find installation /operating instructions online) to see how this should be hooked up, check that the recommended method has been used, if not then don't use it 'til its wired up right.

failing that you could engage a qualified auto electrician, but where's the fun in that? camper electrics shouldnt' be complex and if you can managed to work out for yourself how it works then you'll be able to fix it in the future if it ever goes wrong.

  11. And don't stop with just checking the wiring, the rest of the installation may be just as bad. Check the fuel supply and exhaust. And setup the area around the heater so that nothing can touch it, like the seat belts etc .....

You are lucky. The heater is worth hundreds of pounds alone.

Leisure Fuse box for heater supply .
    Also speaker junk.
Heater has thermostat/ on/off cable to control, fuel pump pulse feed and a 12 volt supply....

Dont cut any wires, especially if its connected to the heater - theres a cover plate on the heater and things plug in inside , if I remember right. I paid £1000 in 1998 for a Webasto...

Go slow, be logical trace and label wires. Dont trash stuff.

  13. Jeeeezzzzz .....

I thought i had problems but that``probably` needs someone knowing their electrical onions to sort it all out .

I`d suggest at least 50% of that lot can be shortened / discarded - great heater though

  16. The speakers do work! Well they did... I unattached them from the rock & roll bed panel & haven't tested them since.

    Better leave them disconnected.
