I've had the bus since 2014 and never really thought i needed (or wanted) to know what the mpg is.. i knew it wasn't good but its all about smiles per gallon right? Well, given the use it's had recently as a delivery wagon i was forced to keep receipts and.. well i couldn't help but work out the mpg. 14.7 mpg! Ouch. It's a stock 2.0 type 4, weber 34 ICTs. Is this about the norm? or should i look at getting it fettled/ tuned. It has the carb jets that it came with from eurocarb and there has been some discussion on here the smaller jets work better - i got these but havn't fitted yet. Would this improve my mileage possibly?
Mine is a 1600 & once did just 13.6 pottering about. Work it out on a run, that's where it counts. I can get 26 - 28.
You should never work out the mpg just as you should never add up what a resto really costs, it's masochistic
Ouchie ouch ouch. I was under the impression that type 4s were vastly superior both power wise and fuel economy wise. I’d consider the low twenties to be a minimum for a type one so this don’t seem right. The tuning of an engine as you say is a large part of the economy but also the right foot is another part, and trying to keep up with modern traffic is achievable but again at the cost of fuel economy. Get booked in with someone you trust and see where it goes Ozziedog,,,,,,,Tie lots of big feathers to your right toe
When my bus was fitted with the 1700 Type 4 with twin 34 ICTs I used to get somewhere between 15 and 22 mpg. So I am not surprised at your calculations.
..should have added, this was loaded up to the max, mostly foot to the floor motorway driving so i would guess it would be better with less weight to carry and a lighter right foot - this really should be worst case.
Even on an 'uneconomical' 1641 T1, I got about 22mpg from Stoke to Southampton running at 68mph on the flat bits unless the limit was lower. But that is not wide open throttle. Normally I see 20-21mpg on average driving. Not a lot of change to that figure for 60000+ miles. The progressive made a tiny difference .
Somert wong there. T25 with 2ltr CU engine standard Solex carbs. I get 20-24 normal driving A&B roads' 17-20 motorways' depends on headwinds and how fast I go usually 70+. Even with the 700kg caravan on the back never been below 15mpg usually 16-17mpg
My type 4 2.0 fuel injection gives about 25mpg on motorway loaded and about 19 around town but did get fantastic miles per gallon when on the back of the AA truck.
@IZZYBAY yep, that's the best way The bus did exactly the same trip again yesterday, less load, and prob more relaxed driver so i'll do another check and see if it's the same.
Mine’s a type 4 2l and I get around 25mpg on average so yes that sounds wrong. Unless it’s your calculator. It’s a nightmare converting litres into mpg. Well it is if you’re as rubbish at maths as I am ..
2:0 type 4 with twin dellorto average about 20mpg. Never go over 60 mph. When I was running in my new engine I drove from Newcastle to Cornwall at a very steady 55 and got 25mpg.
South Manchester to Gretna on a full tank 142 miles had no idea what was left in the tank because the fuel gauge was broken doing 65-70 Mph. what the sum i cannot remember how much the fuel tank hold?
