won't start when warm

  1. took the van out for a 20mile drive today as the weather was so nice on the way home it stalled at a junction and took a while to start i had to give it a lot of revs to build up to tick over when i got home and pulled on the drive it cut out again i decided to stick my head in the engine bay all seem normal i put my head next to the carb (while engine not running) and could here a gurgling/boiling type noise which worried me somewhat the starts fine from cold but when warm i have this problem

    any ideas ?

  2. The bubbling noise is the tank breather system....air passing through fuel condensate in the two traps in the engine cooling air intakes.

  3. Not starting when hot is common. The Haynes manual says to put the throttle to the floor and keep it there while you turn it over. Let me know if it works :)

  4. There is a volume screw on the side of the carb which you can adjust the idle speed which will get you home where u can investigate further

    What carb/carbs have you got?

  7. I had a similar problem on my beetle and it was that the choke was fitted incorrectly. It was causing the butterfly value at the top of the carb to close to early. All it tuck was to undo the 3 retaining screws slightly and turn the choke till you felt some resistance (while the engine is warm) and then re-tighten. this helped alot on mine.

  8. Wow, the same thing happened to me today, was having trouble getting reverse on drive so went to local ind est to find a flat bit of road to do a bit of selector plate adjusting , so was doing some back & for back & forth for a while then went for fuel, got back in van and it wouldn't start... So I'll watch this thread keenly.

I had the same symptoms. I found a rust hole in the tinware right by the fuel pump, this coupled with running a little lean (and hence hot) meant that the pump was getting heat soaked and vaporising the fuel after a run and then idling.

  11. I would say either fuel boiling in a hot carb from running rich or fuel leaking into the engine when not running in turn flooding the engine causing issues restarting.

Could have been Carb. Icing......are the warm air pick up pipes etc fitted.
