Wobbly wobbly steering

  1. The last thing I need to sort out on my van (for now!) is the wibbly wobbly steering!!!

At 50mph+, I find it really hard to keep the van straight. Cross winds seem to have a ridiculous effect on the van! I know aerodynamically they suffer from crosswinds more, but I can't help but think something is up.........

There are three main things I understand it might be:

    1) MOT had advisory on ball joints. So will be looking to change those.
    2) Steering box adjustment. How is this done?
    3) Front ARB. Should probably check it's actually got one first!

Anything else I should look at?

  2. rubber steering coupling
    Steering damper

What ball joints were the advisory for?

  3. I'll have to double check. Not at home at the mo.

  4. All the above + tracking , lazer if there`s one near you - they are quite simply BRILLIANT !
    Check brakes aren`t binding .
Steering boxes can be overtightened leading to the weaving you`re having .
    Good luck

  5. It's almost as if I have to move the wheel loads to correct the van. Which makes me think steering box. But I'd like to do the other bits too.

  6. New ball joints made a big difference to my vague steering.

rickyrooo1 Hanging round like a bad smell

my steering box was devoid of oil, putting oil in and a new damper worked wonders

Add camber to your list, just ahead of tracking, has to be done in that order.
Mind you I've been over and over mine and it's still pretty crud in a crosswind. It was only any good when it was 4 inches lower. You can't win them all.

It was at first but now seems a bit loose, but I haven't had time to look properly. Thanks for reminding me I've had my head full of engine for 6 months!

  13. If it turns out to be dodgy i have some others now, sprayed in a nice pink colour

I think it's probably just dandy and needs adjusting, I didn't adjust it when I fitted it, it seemed bob on, had you adjusted it?

On that subject you would possibly be amazed how tight a new one is c/w instructions not to adjust it and blob of yellow paint on the adjusting screw. I do think people under-adjust them based on this.

  16. Only roughly, as i understand it it has to be done after fitting

  18. swing arm pin.
edit. molteni mike beat me to it. check the pin housing doesn't look like the one in the picture and check the pin itself is flapping around in the bushes.

Or that the arm doesn't move up and down, this won't be the bushes, it'll be the pinch-bolt thread needs cleaning out and the arm is not on the pin far enough - every bus I look at that has failed on idler pin is this, it's never the bushes and I've given up replacing them. If you can't screw the bolt in with your fingers it's not right.
