wiring

  1. hi all
looking around engine bay the wiring is in a bad state
over the years its had bits added and bit taken out so it is in a bit of a state
the worst bit is the wires going up to the computer plug there lots of bear bits of wire and termal block everywhere

is it worth trying to repair it all or get new loom and replace it all
can i just cut the plug off and make good all the wires

the last month or so the battrey has been draining if left connected so think there is a short somewhere

    thanks in advance

  2. when I did mine I worked out what I needed to keep, traced it back to the main loom, hacked it all out, fitted a multi plug and then rewired each element I needed. No spare wires flapping about but spare terminals on the multiplug so I can add to it should I need to. Easier and cheaper than doing a full loom replacement for the time I had for fitting it.

Took the opportunity to hide it all too, so there are now no wires on show in the engine bay at all (apart from to coil and plugs)
    :)

  4. from memory the multi plug was 12 terminals, sure it was maplins? Don't recall now - I bought a few off them and some off ebay and used the one which seemed best.

    1) Rear Lights
    2) Brake
    3) Indicator L
    4) Indicator R
    5) Fog
    6) Injun coil
    7) Oil pressure switch

I took a live spur from somewhere I don't remember for the door switch for the injun bay lights, on the other side i've mashed something up for reverse lights which i'll tidy up when I refit the van in the spring - at this point i'll likely do the entire loom. Wiring for the rear near side lighting is hidden and passes through the body at the top of the engine bay.

I've hidden the batteries out of the injun bay so no wires there, everything passes into a hidden and masked channel, you can only get to it if you know its there and where ;). Power to and from the battery, the coil and starter get isolated separately, someone would have to poke around for a long time to figure a way of getting it started, by which time i'd have got my rope, carpet, baseball bat, shovel and bucket of lime ready and the car boot open ready for a drive... ;) I've got just the spot ;)

  5. does the dianostic plug do anything or can i just remove it ?
from what i have seen the loom is one peice on a 75 bus

  6. Lovely clean engine bay Joker, neat wiring too, after we had a little fire with the wires to the choke etc I need to do ours, good idea of the multiplug!

  8. my last bay had a engine fire when i bought it so i made up a new rear loom from the fusebox plug to the rear lights/engine, i used 13 core euro trailer flex which had just the right amount of wires ;)

  9. A lad i knew re wired his mini with aircraft cable from work supply

For those of you that watched the carbon arcing fires video you can guess what happend in the end

That cable was for relativly vibration free satelights in space not sir alec issigonis 1950s design

  10. ok thanks for the replys
    Joker engine bay looks great
the engine coming out soon so will see what i can remove think the dianostic plug is a gonner lol
