Winter White Westy

  1. Got a bit done at the weekend, cut out most of the bits that need replacing and cleaned up all the edges also cleaned up bits that I thought needed a patch to find out it needs a panel!! Hopefully start putting new metal in over the next couple of days.

  2. Been rebuilding one of the louvred windows. After stripping it down and sanding off the pitting I wasn't happy with the finish so gave it a quick blast over on the polisher, it's not 100% but looks a lot better then it did so happy with the result.

Just got one more to latte to strip and rebuild and both side mechanisms which I am yet to work out how it all comes apart. Looks like a closed rivet just got to work out what I can replace them with once I drill them out as they're quite rusty.

On with welding new panels in tomorrow.

  3. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Fine wire wool with Autosol is good for tired ali, followed by just the autosol on a rag. I did my westy and 10 years later still looked good.

  4. Nice tip although a bit late for this window although is a spare so could try it on the next and compare which looks best.
The problem with the polisher is you can't get in all areas

  5. Got some help today with the welding and fitting of the first panels and show me the way with the rest. Managed to get the seat belt repair panel in and a small repair to the arch done. Happy with the result and feel more confident using the welder to start on other panels.

Tomorrow my aim is to cut a few bits of the cargo floor out and fab some repair panels up where the seat mounts are as there's a few holes around it. Also gives me good practice on metal never seen!!

no worries mate, its a really nice bus isn't it!

  9. Oh yes, Just like the way he's done the hob sink unit, Along with a few other bits.

  10. Finished keying in the locks tonight, Apart from one front door as the lock was buggered when I took it apart and the ignition as that was missing. All working nice and smooth. Quite chuffed with my self, As all my dubs up to date have either never had sliding doors that lock and always had at least 2 different keys.

If anyone has a spare barrel for a front door or ignition they want to donate would be much appreciated...

Next on the evening missus at work list is to finish the louvre window off and reassemble it. I also need to take the clocks out and try and sort something out with them as the edge is all cracked from being in the sun for all them years.

  11. I've got a spare quarter light which I was wanting to restore to replace the one that's in but how do I remove the glass so I can clean up and spray the frame?

  12. Got a new roll of wire today so cracked on with patching up the bits of rust.
Just before Christmas managed to get the arch repaired where there was a small hole

Today I got a couple of patches on the floor, learning fast with the welder. Seem to get better with every bit most of the time I do.
    Floor sections .

Cleaned one up but had the bug to weld.
Moved on to inside the arch. Cut it out last week so just had to fab the panels up to fit, cut a little l shape bit to repair the top hat where it had corroded through.

Then put the piece in on top quite happy but still need to improve on the welding a bit but not bad for first attempts.

Also got all the locks keyed alike and restored the first louvres window.

I forgot what engine you said t'other day, if its Type 1 @lowie has more engines in his garage than a little, maybe worth dropping him a line, Im sure he's got fanhousings & tinware

  16. Yep type 1, Going to see a mate tomorrow who says he has some so I'll see what I come back with.

    Cheers

  18. This is coming along really nicely, i look forward to your updates with interest. Is the interior still savable or are you going to have to restore / replace parts of it?
Good job too with all the weld repairs as you say you haven't done it before, like i say, im ok'ish with the welder but great with a grinder :)

  19. There wasn't an interior in it when I brought it, but I'm spending many an hours scouring the internet looking for 69 interiors so I can reproduce it!! Luckily though I already have the headliner templates and it came with the early rear hinge cover. Not in great condition but good for a template!!
Yep as a mate said if your weld ain't perfect you can grind it back to look pretty!
I don't think I'll be tackling the rear arches or front lower valance as I can see it ending up like the Atlantic last week when Hercules past by!!
