Winter White Westy

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by sjhjoinery, Oct 20, 2013.

  1. Thought I'd start a thread on here as when working on it yesterday I had a major dilemma and thought the help would probably come in handy!
Ok so it's a 69 earlybay westy but after selling the t25 I seen this and it didn't think it was too bad for the money!
    So the major issues with the bus are;
    Horrible green paint
    Inner and outer valance
    Engine
    Electrics
    Brakes

All of the other bits seem good, needs a couple of small bits doing here and there but that's about it!

So then this happened was happily removing the green paint when I jet washed it off the paint flaked off to, someone said it was probably a different door but really hacked me off!!! As it's a slow job trying to get it off without removing the original paint!

Any suggestions with paint removable appreciated!!

  2. Oven cleaner is good for paint removal, the really strong nasty stuff.

  3. Have the rear wheel arches been cut?

You have to start somewhere........................put some air in the tyres.
Then you should make a nice new interior for it!!
    Good luck!

  5. If the green has been put on from a rattle can then simple 2k thinners on a rag will wipe it straight off

Quite true, I did a whole bus once after someone tagged it.

  7. Yep typical American style

  8. Tried this it's not worked so far been 500 then 1200 grit wet sanding it off.

  9. Hoping to use the original 69 interior I want it to be as stock as possible. Just love original westy's!!

Bit more of the paint stripping done, after seeing a post on earlybay I've been using 500 grit to get most of the way and finishing it with G6 on the buffer which seems to work better and less chance of burning through.

I'm finding the tight radius bits under the windows a bugger seem to miss the green and then go through to primer but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it!!

Looks like I'll have to try and blend in a few bits as the bottom of the door seems to have no og paint as well as the front arches. :-(

  12. Don't shoot the messenger but a weak solution of nitromors will do it without taking the og paint off. Try watering solutions down and use in an inconspicuous place first before attempting the whole van

  13. I wouldn't even dilute. Modern nitromors barely even burns your skin nowadays :)
    Ovenpride ftw ;)

  14. Tried nitro morse last night and it did bugger all, I don't know if I didn't leave it on long enough or because it's old but found the G6 did the job quicker! Will pick up a fresh can though and try again! I read that if you use nitro morse you naturalize it with methylated spirits. FYI :)

Just fitted my new garage doors and started stripping the front brakes on the bus, managed to find a complete front set which were nearly new on earlybay, so just got to clean up in the arch and weld up a bit on the jacking point.
Need a new lower front ball joint so going to whip that out this afternoon.

New panels arrived in time for Christmas don't seem to get a lot for your money although most is top quality and you can tell the difference!!

  20. Very true, still stands, "you get what you pay for". Just makes the job that much easier if the panels are a correct fit. It's looking good. Merry Merry Everything!!!!
