Winnie the Poo (update: volksworld)

  1. Looks much better with it gone (although it may hurt slightly more now if you bang your head on it..) :)

  2. That residue does come off, but it's hard work!! Use Autosol and wire wool..... Don't worry the wire wool won't scratch the glass :)

  3. Ooo.. And another thing, the reset for the Eber is behind the kick panel in front of the pedals...

Great to see you are enjoying Winnie and fettling her, I reckon she's a potential show winner with a bit of elbow grease! Enjoy:)

not sure i like the idea of losing the space with removing the wardrobe/headbanger but i do agree the sleeping space would be better if you did, that said we all need the vans for different ways.

Ok, so i tried out the glass polishing kit yesterday - this works really well but takes an age.. it's going to quite a bit of effort to get all the windows done but it's not really hard with the drill, just time consuming.

The glass looks like new though when its done so it's well worth it.

  6. Very nice indeed - nothing wrong with brown either - it's definitely unusual and of the period. You could always call it dark beige if you preferred ;)
When I got my bus I wasn't keen on the beige and was set on repainting as soon as possible but it has grown on me as it is a kind of yellowy beige. Maybe when I get some major panel replacements I will look at having a change of colour, but util then not worth it. Same true for yours, especially as it looks so nice and shiny, unless you simply can't bear it of course. :)

  7. So, i've made a start on the glass polishing - it takes an age but the results are worth it.

    Polish going on:

Lewis (aged 6) says "Daddy why are you putting toothpaste on the windows?" :)

Wipe off the polish.. - half of this pane is done (rhs). You can see the difference in the way the water beads:

    Cleaned off, before and after:

You can see in this pic how cloudy the windows were prior to the polishing. After the polish they honestly look brand new and are crystal clear. To give you an idea of how long it takes, it prob took about an hour to do that one pane properly.

I've ordered some additional small polishing heads to get right into the corners on the jalousies. It's going to look great when it's all done.

    :)

  8. Got myself a tatty spare wheel cover off ebay for buttons:

Clean up and a can of brown plasti-dip and it now looks like this:

I've also got the front carpets out - these are going to be replaced with some new items some time soon.

Taking the opportunity to clean up some of the trims. This is the vent/walkthru rear section - was completely nasty and dirty before, cleaned up with scotch pads, grit paper then polished. This is the "work in progress" pic, you can see the difference on the part i've started to polish:

Both seats out also for cleaning/removing the vinyl on the base, plus lubing the runners and swivel mechanism. You would not believe how much squirrel crap we're still finding! Also, with the 36 years of sand and dust in the seat swivel it was very hard to move - now its all clean and lubed it works like new.

    Passenger seat out and cleaned:

Also looking at some timber samples for potential reworking of the interior.

Not decided 100% what we're going to do yet. We were originally looking just to re-laminate, but our joiner buddy has come up with some great options for real wood/ engineered sandwich type thing that not only looks great, is super-light and a much higher quality than the stuff westfalia used originally. We may start with just making up a sample unit first to see how this is going to pan out.

Looking at curtains too next week hopefully plus i'm going to get the bus booked in for rolling road to get the carbs setup properly.

Chose some coir matting, to go with the exterior colour we're actually going to have something lighter than we originally thought (no substitute to getting a bunch of samples and putting them in the vehicle!) Also chosen a vinyl for door cards (going to do front doors plus slider and all the other side panels that are currently just stained ply). We also had a chat around curtains and ended up deciding to go with those too.. it's going to be a big bill but worth it i think and this gets a bunch of stuff done in one go:

Its going to be lovely in there when its all done. Oh, and our first "trial" reproduction cupboard by paul the joiner should be ready soon - can't wait.

I need to work out how the other one's going to go in - i have a westy berlin so there is only a 3/4 bed and a fridge unit in the way. I guess that might help us make the decision to go to a full width seat/ bed set up instead of the 3/4.

ALSO.. got a step. Makes it easier for my little girl (4yrs old) to climb in and out, plus winnie is going to be wedding transport in a couple of months to it'll be easier for the bride to get in and out with the step. This the aluminium one from JK, great quality and fits very easily.

    Now with a step :)

I also took of the empi exhaust and refitted it with a new mount at the tailpipe so it sits level now which looks much better. This is only going to be a temporary system as i'll get a vintage speed at some point, but i have a bunch of other things i need first..!

.. and i've started to clean up the surface rust spots on the cab floor - there's nothing major but i'll get it cleaned up and a coat of anti-rust paint so they don't get any worse - they'll be covered up soon with the new madmatz flooring, and most likely also some noisekiller.

  17. Quick photoshop working out how i want the vw to look when its "done".

Current plans include red9 wishbones and adjustable spring plates for the rear for a mild drop. 16" steelies with OE hubcaps and some stripes.

    Other opdates:
I bought some gas struts to replace the "H" frame on the pop top. Should get those on this weekend.
I just ordered some Wayside Adhesives "superflex" sound deadening. When i've finished the de-rust and painting the cab floor i'll get these on to all of the floors and door skins. I looked at dynamat and noisekiller but this stuff is cheaper and comes highly recommended by a classic car restorer acquaintance: http://www.waysideadhesives.com/Superflex-Smooth-Sound-Deadening-Pads--4_prod.php

.. and there's more! I had the van on the rolling road for a tune/carb balance / setup @ btec racing (Bradley's garage) in Shipton-Under-Wychwood. Top chaps, really know their stuff. 54.9bhp at the wheels (67.5 at the crank) and 100 lbft torque. Not a rocket-ship i grant you but a solid result for the old girl!

  18. Busy day today.

We'd started to clean the flocking on the inside of the westy roof when we first got the van, but we'd not made much impact on it (it's pretty hard to do working upside down). In addition some places on the poptop fabric had started to come adrift so we took the decision to take the roof off the van for fixing and cleaning.

TBH although i wasn't looking forward to it, in reality it took like 20 mins start to finish to undo the bolts and carefully manoeuvre the roof carefully off the van, much easier than i thought.

Ten minutes later and we had the fabric separated from the roof and could start cleaning.

Soda crystals and scrubbing first, followed by rinsing (vac came in handy for that) then steam cleaner. I also took off the hinges, cleaned them up, lubed and refitted with some home made neoprene gaskets so you don't have raw metal bolted directly to the painted roof.

    Some pics of todays' efforts:
