Windscreen, Brasilian

Discussion in 'Panels, seals, doors etc' started by Joker, Sep 7, 2013.

  1. I bought a screen from Genuinevwbits for £65 which came from a Brazilian bay window van. It was sold as suitable for a late bay <79. It didn't fit. It was 2mm oversized al around. That means it was 4mm oversize left to right, top to bottom, total.

National Windscreens (i have used them for 20+ years) finally gave up and removed the screen after hours of effort.

They then thought to measure the screen against the original, a pukka genuine factory fit screen fitted by VW Germany in Emden in February 1972.

The brasilian screen was bigger, and also much thinner. They finally decided to call in a guy who works on truck windows, he used a grinder to remove the excess material.

The seal used was a new German seal from VWH

Unless you are willing to spend the time, extra money and effort I would not recommend this product.

My windscreen man will supply one delivered for £60-70. Everyone has them, they're nothing out of the ordinary.

This news comes as a big disappointment as i thought there is no reason to worry, since the south-american windscreens will fit for sure. so we better stash the old ones then.

I would enjoy trying to fit one of these brazillian windscreens, a couple off mm isn't much.
I recently removed a screen and the (and I know he's experienced) restorer had shaved off half the new paint on the surround to bare metal, presumably trying to fit it. After re-painting the surround with thick coats of 2-pac, the screen popped in dry, no trouble at all.
So, if anyone in East anglia has one of these to fit, please feel free to challenge me. :)
