Damn and blast, the camper is storming hot, I’m about to drive home after a weekend of camping, and would you Adam and Eve it, the window glass on the drivers door has parted company with the winder mechanism.
A sweltering drive, and I’m home.

I know the blasted door card has got to come off (I hate those off-set clips with a passion) but what am I likely to find, and is there a glue based solution to getting the glass to stay back in the channel?
    Help!
Thanks in advance, you lovely lot :)

Depending on when you last had the door apart you may find, like I did a good few years back, that the u shaped metal channel that the bottom of the window sits in has rusted away.
There should be rubber strip between the window and the channel that holds it in place.
If all is intact then you might just need to tighten up the u shaped channel by squeezing it a little. My new channels were a bit loose so I just nipped them up a bit in a vice.

  3. ^this. If you whip the door card off, all will be revealed. Likely to be the clampy strip has disintegrated.

    Ah thanks James.
The door bottom had some welding about 18 months ago, although not by me obviously! But I’d hope the guy who did it would’ve noticed/ commented etc if the guts of it all was rusted terminally.... so hopefully a pinch with some grips might do it ?
    I’ll give it a try......

  5. Ooooh, be careful. Toughened glass and pinching are not good bedfellows...

Have a look first. May be that the rubber strip has pulled out.

Blimey I did a good job gluing that waterproof membrane on!

    The channel looks okay:

...... would look better with the glass in it though :D

  7. Rubber strip gone then?

  8. When you’re done, need to give those doors a good soaking in Waxoyl or similar!

It’s all just a bit old and original. Rubber strip is there and complete, just 45 years old.

Think I’ve got it to all grip. Might have slightly mangled the splines on the winder handle in the process, and then remembered that I gave my spare away, but I can sort that.
@snotty There’s quite a goodly amount of waxoyl in the cavity already luckily, but will dribble some dynax in anyway whilst I’m here.

No, we can see naked rusty blobs in the picture. Wind the window up and blast away with say a quarter to half a litre of goop per door. Unblock drain holes, catch excess..

  13. Let’s be honest - who doesn’t enjoy dribbling their dynax. I know I do!

I prefer hosing it around with compressed air myself..

  15. I've had this problem on and off. Bought a new metal channel and rubber, thought it was all fine and it fell off again last weekend driving down the M23...it was a windy journey.

Bought some super strong adhesive to fix it in place as its really annoying me!

I might see if I can get a new rubber at some point, but at the moment all is good.
New winder handle arrived today after I inadvertently ground the ridgy bits off the old one when trying to fix the up and down mechanism.
Hurrah I can open the window whilst I’m driving..... that should bring the summer to an abrupt halt.

  17. Mine became detached in the absolute middle of nowhere - and I mean nowhere as in central Turkey. Only thing I had around was a couple of Araldite tubes so mixed em up and it held for yonks....
Was going to suggest this but it seemed a bit 'bush' , obviously not !!

Sikaflex would work on the window glass in the joint with the winder mechanism.

And I have Araldited my winder handles to the splined shaft as the VW do Brasil splines were softer than the diecast zinc winder handles I use. A sharp smack with a small hammer on the Allen bolt holding the handle on releases the winder from the door.
