Why you need to check your breather hoses

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lofty, Mar 18, 2013.

  1. While you type 1 engine-ers are changing your fuel lines (R9 is fine), don't forget to check your steel fuel pipe and grommet where it goes through the tinware. If the grommet's sh*gged, the tinware will slowly saw through the steel pipe, right above no 3 exhaust port...

  2. Para where did you be. Your replacement hoses from, I can see my straight hose from the tank to the metal pipe is perished so what to replace that, the elbow and all of the smaller joints on the breathers, I guess he breather tube is standard 9mm fuel hose but where did you source the straight bit and the elbow from in the end and are hey good quality?

  3. Any heads up on where your sourced your replacement from buddy?

Sorted mine -the one behind the spare wheel today

  5. Sorry i must have missed your post

I havent bought replacements yet as my bus is still away
I would also like to hear what other people went for and what the quality was like

Id like both the straight pipe from the filler to the tank and the filler pipe to the filler ring to be resistant to ethanol in modern fuel but nowhere seems to state they are

  6. Here is mine, its even covered in mould, should it be that shape?

Just to double check should it be 7.6mm pipe?

  7. I've checked mine tonight, couldn't be bothered to do it though so will do it when I have an hour or so.
Mine is also that shape due to how the pipes it connects sit.

I've started to do my easy ones, I've looked at the filler neck which looks just like the one posted above, I can't figure out how it comes out this :s
Think its going to be a 2 man job, to all those that have done it does the tank need to come out?

  8. Managed to get all mine with the tank in, inc the fuel filler, tho my fingers and forearms have now seen better days...
Type 4 with engine in but carbs out

The metal pipes inevitably get bent as you fit the connector bit. So after you've fitted it, yank the floating metal pipe about as approriate to relieve the strain and hopefully avoid that happening.

  10. Can't remember. I think vehicle, it was a couple of years ago, not cheap!

  11. I have phoned around and cool air are the most competitive, and the only ones that have them in stock!

  12. Thanks Zed, I managed to straighten it by said yank method :)

The pipe does use 5.6mm hose but it was very tight, Soaked in hot water and it was ok.

  13. For type 4 engined folk, if you have a look on ratwell.com, he lists the various pipe diameters used on your bus (somewhere).

  14. I think that every time I look something up in his site! Still, very glad he had all that time as it helps me - so very grateful to him :)

  15. Please can someone confirm all the bits I need to change, to reduce the risk of fire. I've seen something about R9 pipe, but i have no idea what i need and where to buy it from. Please help
I'm about to have a new gearbox fitted, so whilst the engine is out:
Replace breather pipes behind engine firewall, replace breather pipe up behind the spare wheel -
Check/Replace fuel filler pipe and the pipe lower down into the tank
    Check/Change fuel lines if required
Check steel fuel pipe and grommet where it goes through the tinware. If the grommet's sh*gged, the tinware will slowly saw through the steel pipe, right above no 3 exhaust port...

Are there any other jobs that i should get done whilst the engine and gearbox are out - it's being done by a pro, not me!

  16. love this place telling me how to do things... wondered what the pipes things in air intakes were. problem i have is my engines back in now and would of checked if i'd known. is it possible to do with 1600 engine still in place or not. i will check the others but i know i dont have a pipe going from ' T ' piece to standard air filter box. is unleaded fuel hose ok to use

    You want R9 rated hose.
You can get to the joint behind the spare wheel well with the engine in no problem. Take the rear light fitting out and its really easy to get to through the hole.

  18. You say that like it's the easiest thing. I recall that I tried to take the light fitting out but it's held in by some long bolts with really inaccessible nuts. Couldn't do it and reckon I would have needed an especially long socket to have a chance.

Personally, I found it was easier just to reach in through the main hatch and do the contortionist thing.
