Hi All Cut along story short! We had our van in for a service spruce up and wheels sprayed, picked van up last week went for an over nighter and at least 100 miles. A knocking noise started from the driver side back on the way home we tried carrying on to a safe place to stop as in deepest darkest Wiltshire on B roads when back wheel started wobbling..blow out! Tow truck home after about 15 miles on tow truck the driver said your wheel has come off! After looking the wheel had just come off and the nuts just sitting there....?? Obvious wheel nuts not tightened up right? BUT our man is a adamant the wheels were torqued on going to pick van up 2moro
Paint on the part of the wheels where the wheel nuts sit ? The paint can compress as the wheel but is tightened. This can eventually cause wheel nuts to come loose. It’s good practice on painted or powder coated wheels to remove the finish from the wheel bolt wells. Stirlingmoz
Always recheck wheel bolts after work of any sort, it will be in their terms somewhere, but it’s a common issue with refurbished wheels, I always file powder coating off the nut seats
I had a car back from a garage once and all four wheels nuts were loose because they were only finger tight! Haven't used that garage since !
No But, seeing as you ask...it was heading to Malham when TLB had a meet there, we had painted all four wheels on Major & didnt remove the paint from the nut seat Said wheel went just approaching Blyth services on the A1, luckily we stopped before a disaster occured. Somewhere on here are images (Markeyman / Purplepantyman took them)
On my wheels the powder coating on the faying surface between wheel and hub was very thick, and it extruded out loosening the wheel. I took a rotary wire brush and removed the paint, then put a smear of copper slip on the bare metal. Tony
Holy Marmite Think i best take a look at my recently coated wheels ... Glad it ended well and you`ve still got the luuurv
I hear mark & Bridget are cruising these days , great couple and funny man . You always have been lucky mark
I had a back wheel fall off my Ford Pop on the day of the test - it had passed too. My fault though. I was going up Benton Bank in Newcastle and the wheel spun off and overtook me. I found two of the nuts and borrowed one from one of the other wheels and got it home. Life was more basic then.
