What should this be attached to?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Stikkolas, May 1, 2019.

  1. Hi all, I was rummaging around in my newly-recommissioned engine and found a tube coming from the air filter that isn’t attached to anything at the other end.

Can anyone tell me what this should be attached to? I’ve looked in various manuals but detail seems a bit light on this subject, or I’ve missed the section of info on it (more likely tbh)

  2. Could be a breather tube, anyone?

If it is, it might go to oil cap, or closeby, on the pedestal stand.

Someone else will chip in, I'm sure someone like @mikedjames will know.

  3. That one goes via a T piece on to your fuel tank breather.

    Yep, this.

  6. Thanks all! What is the likely impact of this not being attached?

Is it essential? Is she still drivable?

I only ask because I’ve no idea how or why it’s not connected.

  7. You may get smelly petrol fumes through the heating. Just connect it to the t-piece, as above.

  8. I'd strongly advise re attaching it.

This photo shows where it should be fitted (hose c to T piece in pic)

  9. The lack of the green pipe D on the above engine made me, at first, think it was the oil breather. Is that normal to be missing the oil breather?

  10. Looks like a non standard oil filler, not ideal

    No. The engine needs it.

  12. That's what I thought too, got an after market one on the Bug engine that is integral to the oil filler lid.

Any excess crankcase pressure on the above engine isn't getting properly vented/relieved. As others have said, not ideal.

  14. Thanks for all the responses. My engine has some issues which prevent me from re-attaching the breather. Namely that the other two pipes have been cut back and the t-piece isn’t there. I’m going to take it to Absolute VW next week to get that looked at (as well as an alarming oil leak which seems to have developed).

I think the bodywork has been done to a pretty good standard, it’s just the mechanical stuff that may have been bodged a bit.

  15. This is most illuminating. Thanks!
My ‘toastie in the cab tubes’ aren’t actually connected to anything . ‘Everyone just gets a propex heater nowadays’ apparently.

If the metal pipes are still there (that go up into the rear vents) just connect them up with a bit of rubber pipe with a "T" in the middle to go to your air filter.
The crank case breather is of more importance imho. Could also explain your oil leak if the case can't breath.

  17. Is the crank case breather the bit of green pipe on that picture above that goes from the oil filler?

Sorry for sounding like a complete novice idiot, but it’s only because I’m a complete novice idiot.
