What oil is best to use

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Mark clements, Jun 25, 2017.

  1. hi all just wondering which oil is best to use in my 1979 t2 2lts engine. So much to choose from with varying advice. What is the general consensus of the best grade to use.
    Thanks a lot

  3. I'd read the handbook as opposed to ask on here. You'll probably burn so much or it will leak out that anything is OK.

The handbook was probably right 40 odd years ago. Oil has moved on a bit since then...

  7. 15/40 full mineral is what most people use, however i have the same engine and use 15/30 fully synthetic.

  8. Valvoline 15/40 , it has some additional addatives that are useful in flat engines .

  9. a lot of us use the 20w50 mineral oil, Comma and Halfords is cheap, I like the Castrol but its a bit dearer.

main thing is to change the oil and filter frequently.

  11. Noooooo.... not the 'What O' question !
As above, put in any modern brand and it will probably be fine. I have a thing for Castrol Magnatec as I bought a load on special but I really don't think it makes as much difference as long as you don't over or under fill it and especially change it regularly

  14. Mineral 20/50 is recommended in my owners handbook. Have just used Millers Pistoneze mineral 20/50 and seems to run a lot better, in my opinion!

Trying out Halso 15w40 as it has a higher ZDDP content. too early to say if it's better than the 20w50 been using.

  17. I saw some old stock GTX 15w50 for £15 at a car boot, I'm gonna use that next. Currently on the Halfords Classic brought on special @ £15 ....

  18. I had been using SAE30 but was getting a fair bit of light flikering at low revs. Changed the oil pressure switch and moved to 15/40 and no problems since.
