What 240v/12v electrics can i use, zig etc

  1. Been reading all the threads on peeps electrics, im want to redo the electrics on my westy for 240v and 12v

ive previously used a zig cf8, consumer unit and split charge relay with a smaller fuse box for stereo etc.

I want to be able to use my propex and stereo. plus also be able to use my laptop or portable dvd for the kids

Ive got a 110 LB already, but not sure wether to get another zig, a sargents ( http://www.sargentltd.co.uk/html/power_shop_0.html ) or go for a charger system and consumer unit

want are my best options, and what are the pros and cons peeps

Zig units are expensive and perhaps a little overkill, more so with the Sargents.

You'll need a consumer unit for a zig anyway.

Consumer unit plus 12 charger is the way I will be going when the zig dies.

  3. Just use a normal battery charger on mine but fixed it where its got ventilation fused outputs to leisure and main battery and a change over switch. you seem to know what you are talking about tbh!

  4. im thinking of using a battery charger instead of a zig unit, tuck it all away in the wardrobe with the consumer unit and a couple of 240v plug sockets and a split charge relay

but unsure what battery charger to use, and if an inverter is worthwhile too, for running my laptop etc

need some advice/pics of installs and what kit is recommended

  5. never done the inverter thing but I do know they take loads of power!

  7. We bought the sargent one, yes OTT but really easy to wire with the premade harness and works so well, we like the remote panel option... you pays your money, you takes your choice...

  10. I fitted this unit under the seat. Charges the LB and runs the stereo, fridge and lighting when parked up. Best of all it's designed to charge a battery and supply 16a at 12V to caravans so no worries adding additional load

  11. Thanks for all the info guys, very helpful

Ive gone for the following set up

    110 AH Leisure battery
    3 stage 18a battery charger
    consumer unit
    auxillery blade fuse box
70a heavy duty split charge set up
    twin 240v rcd controlled sockets
    2 12v sockets

Hoping to stash them in the wardrobe to save room under the bed for my propex

  13. That's the great thing about this set up. There's no need for clever switches and electrical wizardry.
When plugged into 240 hook up, the battery charger/ PSU (power supply unit) charges the leisure battery and supplies all the 12v circuits (fridge etc) when you want to go, you simply unplug. The 12V supply now comes from the leisure battery only.

Please note I don't have a split charger. Spent 21 nights in the bus with the fridge running the whole time and never ran the leisure battery flat, so never fitted one.

  14. I know this is probably another daft question, but does the LB just back feed the 12v circuit via the small fuse box down the charging cable. thanks again

  16. you got a propex in there too Martin, i assume thats a gas bottle to the right

  17. Good guess, but sadly no, it's just where I store the gas bottle for the camping gas stove
