Westy continental water tank mod.

  1. Didn’t know if this would be of any interest to other Continental owners?

Love the layout but one thing I dislike is the water tank; it’s huge and inaccessible. This meant you can’t see how much water you have left and it’s impossible to clean out thoroughly.

I persevered for many years, routinely using Miltons fluid to clean it blind. I converted it to a submersible pump and micro switch tap and it did the job. Another issue was the fact I added a 3 way fridge in front of it which meant getting warm water (although not hot enough to wash!)

I also had to use a hose pipe to fill it and when camping if I ran out of water I’d need to drive over to a tap to fill it with a hose or use a container.

    I had a plan...

I decided to remove the big tank and replace it with an easily removeable smaller tank. Wasn’t too precious about cutting the sink unit as it’s been cut to house the fridge but didn’t want a hack job. Ideally wanted access to tank from sliding door but spice rack in the way.

First job was to alter sink drain. Could have just moved it to the other side straight down but didn’t want any more holes in the floor. Trip to B&Q for some mini drainpipe and some angles...a lot of measuring and head scratching and voila.

Next I used some shelving off cuts to make the ‘shelf’ as it’ll get a bit wet (coated in white.) Used batons and some ply to box in back of fridge. Carefully cut a door and added a hinge. Unless you were looking you’d not notice it. Much easier to fill and use. Doesn’t rattle around as it’s a snug fit. Was going to add a locking push button handle thing but it doesn’t swing open so no need. It’s also behind the stool so fine.

The holes are for my 240v sockets (new consumer unit and sockets going in.)

I had an adjustable plastic micro switch controlled tap before. The pipe connection snapped clean off. This is a ‘boat’ one. Very robust and looks the part but the whale pump is a bit too powerful! I’ll need to bend the tap a bit as it sprays back out of the sink! Fine for filling the kettle though

Anyhow...thought it might be of some use to someone.
