Westfalia Berlin Floor and Sub Floor

  1. To give you an idea of how much taller this flooring is, the top of the flotex comes to just below halway up the walkthrough vents....

If you are short on vertical space and want to fit the very best insulation for thickness use Aerogel....remarkable stuff, but spendy

STOP now. It's Sunday evening, I've got the washing up to do, coal to fetch, floors to sweep & you've started on insulation..........:)

  3. No....I think you'll find that you started on insulation;)

  5. any chance you could post a link as I'm not sure I would find the right stuff?

  6. google Low E insulation....this is a trademark product...there are other similar products available, using the same principle Aluminium foil/cross linked foam.

avoid the super shiny silver faced stuff as this is usually made from Mylar (plastic) looks space aged.doesn't reflect heat half as well.....if you don't believe me hold a kit kat wrapper and a piece of aluminium in either hand;)

Sorted it. Thanks all for input.
All Westy floors are simply 9mm something or other with a carpet over the top. (thanks @zed for the right track)
Crucially, the sub-floor only just tucks under the bed box.
The reason for this is that the steel van floor actually kicks up slightly where it meets the tank bulkhead. If the ply/hardboard sheet butted up to this, it would throw the bed base forward and make the cushions dip when the bed is deployed.
I will chuck a photo on here for future reference when the new floor is down.

    9mm board, low threshold.

  8. How did you get on with the new floor ? Did you put another layer of ply down before the vinyl or carpet ?
I saw the madmatz kit at the weekend and they have a closed cell insulation that goes into the floor recess and the you ply and vinyl over the top. Issue might be too much flex in the floor if you use say a 6mm ply with the vinyl.
Option could be to 9mm in well, layer of this insulation then a 3mm on top before vinyl.
Loved to see how you got on.

Hi @Lofty , thanks for asking. At the moment the ply floor is all we have in.
In fact apart from the top vinyl covering, that's all I will fit. I did consider a layer of closed cell insulation under but in the end opted just for the ply. It's rock solid.

I've concluded that the propex will keep us warm and that 9mm ply is an adequate insulator.
I considered that the wheel tubs, walkthrough and cab floor would all have to be similarly insulated to give any significant benefit and concluded the gain wasn't worth the hassle!
We will use a small rug, thats easy to store & shake out to keep clean, for keeping the toes off the vinyl in the chilly evenings! :D

The ply was screwed down through the high points of the corrugation in about half dozen spots. The bed box bolts over it and the fridge box and kitchen cabinet will keep it down opposite the slider. It has been edge sealed with a mastic and it will be belt sanded to remove any high spots on the threshold. I'm back on the bus tomorrow so will pop up a pic of current floor install.:)

    gents
I hope to get some Ply on the way home for the flooring in my bus but stupidly forgot to take some measurements
For the recess or 'well' in the floor I know it is a 9mm thickness I need but what size board will I do i need ? Same question for the top layer of ply which will be 3mm.
Will it have to be a 8x4 or will I be able to use a smaller board(s).

    Cheers chaps

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Good question, but I'm not familiar with whether berlin floor extends under the cupboards and bed.

Sorry i missed your question before you finished work Lofty. I'll measure the sub floor tomorrow. I can still see how far under the R&R bed it extends so this should help unless you've sorted it already ....

  13. Thanks chaps but I managed to sort it out this afternoon. Picking up the ply tomorrow. I came home from work lunchtime and took out the rear seat and the flooring that was there. Basically I'll be putting 9mm ply in the recess part, top it with the closed cell insulation that came with the madmatz kit, 3mm on top of that , that will go up to the edges. If I have it right, there will be just enough room for the tiles to go under the bed and the kitchen. Then datum is the raised brackets on the floor that the furniture bolts to.

    Sounds like a plan.....
For what it's worth, I don't tend to run any top floor covering under the units. I trim it up to the units and stick the edges down with carpet tape or such like.
This way, if the floor gets damaged or Mrs Monkey fancies a change, then i don't have to pull the units out to rip up the old & lay the new.

  15. Quick update from the last few days.
Bit of a touch up on the floor first with some primer

    Then touch up paint

    Next was closed cell underlay

Then 9mm ply shaped to the recess, that was screwed down making use of some holes that were already in the floor thereby securing the floor and filling some holes at the same time

Finally 3mm ply was screwed to the 9mm to cover the whole area and to make it solid and the tiles were glued on last. Just needs a polish now.

That looks great Lofty, I like the colour combos

  17. Thanks for that. Took a long time to decide but went for something that should compliment the new laminate. Will likely try and match some material to the colours in the floor for some new curtains.

  18. Some great help here. I have just laid 9mm floor in the recess then going for a 3mm ply upper floor. This I will have to do in two pieces, as I could get the length from an 8x4, but not the width, so got a half sheet so the join will be under my units and shouldn't have problems with flexing at the join. So when all the units, buddy seat and table go in, they should hold everything in place
I'm going use a contract poly floor I have left over from my kitchen that comes in planks like laminate floor, but is rubber backed, so it's flexible and should help with sound deadening, hopfully!
