Welding top hat and other pieces - paint or bare metal?

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Nicolasticity, Nov 26, 2017.

  1. When welding up panels (mine are from schofields and all bare uncoated steel) is the consensus to paint with weldthru paint or a thin coating of high zinc primer or leave bare and seal / prime after?

  2. I would suggest both. I put weldthru paint on the inside of a panel that I would not be able to get to afterwards. Then on the outside once welded up. Used Bonda primer and seam seal.

I’ve gone ott with ours and zinc prime then epoxy mastic the inside of all panels then weld through primer on the weld joints (paint ground away on weld points).

  4. Top coat will be 2K - does this work with bonda primer? I used 2 pack epoxy primer on an MG Midget floor which worked grand.

  5. Weld through primer tends to burn away
so you will meet to get some protection back around the welds..

    Epoxy primer works well....
