I thought whilst I was at redoing my push rod seals I'd replace the valve adjustment lock nuts. On a t4 they are 10mm x 1mm pitch, but VWH are charging £2.40 each which seems a little excessive. My local fastener shop has this size for considerably less but I don't know if I need some special grade steel to put up with the hot pounding conditions. Does anybody know what spec this should be?
Half height ones.. hardware store versions been on ours nearly 4 years with no bother Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
The size isn't the issue though. I can get them round the corner, but I was expecting that because the ones that VWH sell are so expensive that they must be made of some essential vanadium tungsten alloy. Given that Deefer66 has fitted bog standard lock nuts maybe it's not so critical after all.
Hard to say how hard they are unless you do a Rockwell test, but VW gave them a specific part number rather than an N part number for general fixings for some reason.
they probably are harder so they can be adjusted regularly without stripping the threads etc, but if you don't need them to last 40 years its probably ok, they may be marked
Don’t think they are any harder than standard grade, they tend to wear the corners off when the spanner slips
That’s the problem with several of mine - the spanner slips because the corners are worn, so they wear some more etc.
I would get the EMPI ones. The special EMPI nuts gall onto the adjusters so you have to lock nut them off to get them to move.
