I think somethings 'blown' on the van :(
I was revving it up and down a while yesterday to see if i'd cured the oil leaking from the breather pipe, found out it was leaking because the oil deflector plate was not fitted on the recent engine rebuild, to compensate for this i simply put stainless steel wool in the breather under the filler cap with a round plate with holes in to retain the wool, works well and air still flows up into oil bath air cleaner ok.

Trouble is as i revved the engine it suddenly sounded different and dropped revs, like a dull roar, seems to come from the central area of the engine, inside and underneath, like an overall noise not a blown gasket noise.
Took it for a run today and it's just the same, sounds 'boomy' in the cab. Drives ok, maybe running hotter and ticks over a bit faster. The only other thing i've recently done is an oil change, Halso 10w/30. The engine had new barrels, pistons and heads a 1000 miles ago.

Any thoughts guys?, i've got a bad feeling about this. The engine has been out four times in the three years since i've owned the van, getting past an expensive joke.

  2. Has something been sucked in the fan? The seal or such? That might explain the noise ?

I was just talking to Simon at Johnsons and he said the exact same thing, a rag maybe. Just going out for a look.
If that's the case can it be removed without dropping engine?.
    Thanks for the swift reply.

  4. Just reach around behind the fan shroud (or find a small child to do it). Keep the ignition keys in your pocket ;)

Result !. Just whipped the air filter out, reached behind and found a couple of sheets of kitchen roll, hopefully that all there is in there.
I'll nip back out , re fit filter and hope for the best. Didn't realise what a suction the fan must have !.

  9. Does the engine sound different now?

  10. Scorched confetti coming through the cab vents could’ve been amusing

Use a mirror to make sure its all out. I managed to suck the engine bay seal in and there were still three or four fragments trapped when I finally pulled the engine.

It does not do the alternator bearings much good running with an off balance fan. I dont think my alternator was ever quite the same, I changed it in the end for a better one off a guy at Dubfreeze 2019.

Scarily , my disintegrated piston on another occasion resulted in a dull roar but also a severe and long lasting drop in power. It was the little bit of crank case sitting on the tinware gave me a clue.
