Mines much lighter than a westy and your calc link thinks 125-130 hp would get me 17 secs so there's hope. Bronze would do me, I'll get those CV's changed ready. :D

Not sure I dare to rev the nuts and drop the clutch though. Imagination is a powerful thing and it could get expensive...

I was going to say a full blown Westy weighs a lot and sprinting is about lightness too.

Having said that, aero is a huge factor.

  4. I don't think I'm close yet, but a bit more work might get it into the ballpark. If I could get near, it would be worth stripping it all out to get a Bronze.

I'm miles away with either a 1641 or the 2.0 type 4; 18 secs, it'd be about 18 days at the moment!!

Im planning a Subaru conversion, I have the tools and experience to do the mods myself but costing it out l makes me wince . I'm only doing it or at least planning to do it as its something I've always done, viz built hot rods and modified stuff. Returned To VWs but not into the aircooled "scene" even though there not that bad really and my ghia will probably always be aircooled :) I just like what I like . Any ways back to the conversion cost... estimated only .... I got my 100,00 mile subaru for £250, full MOT and ready to roll.. the bell housing conversion is roughly £500, might as well do the clutch so add £100 find a suitable rad and might as well be new and probably alloy , £300? alloy tube for cooling pipes £100, engine mount £50 ( home made) various cooling hoses to hook stuff up £100 Intake reverser thingy, no point messing around making one there only £50, modified sump, £ 50 ( home made). Stainless exhaust system £400

    total so far £1900

Now gearing, if you want to put up with the high revs and questionable reliability of your old gearbox your gonna make a saving BUT if you seek a good used box with a 4:57 final ratio you might need to pay £600.. and it could need a rebuild, ( trust no one ). A rebuilt box with a used final drive the likes of a freeway flyer with a 4:57 will set you back the thick end of £1600..

    new total £3500

then add various cables and some sort of heating system plus all the sundries bits and bobs and you could be looking close to £4000 Plus your time or that of a third party..

Now youve done all that how do you propose to stop that speeding bullet.... find another wedge for a brake upgrade or drive sensibly to counter all that extra speed and power ? ;)

Makes a tuned VW motor look an attractive proposition, but were all different, do things for different reasons and have differing budgets and expectations. The balls in your court..and its a complete pain trying to make the decision.

  9. The advantage of Subaru is when the block cracks you can buy another for a couple hundred quid ..
Some people just like to keep things aircooled ....I'm one of them ...
For me the fun is building the thing

  10. I'll have to sit down with the laptop and pick a few quotes out to answer some of the questions, but to strip it back down to basics:

Terminal speed is going to be around 75mph, but a lot of your 1/4 time is won or lost in the first 60ft and 1/8th of a mile.

Bhp you want a bare minimum of 100Bhp at the wheels, so 140 plus at the flywheel.

Cost... Well there's a piece of string question... £4k plus for a home built motor!! And that'll be type 1 or 4 regardless!!

    :)

  11. Stock 1600 does the 1/4 in 24 - 28secs

So that eight seconds are pretty expensive!! Hookers cost less ;)

  12. So checking out the calculator thing if I assumed my devon is 3200lbs - I'm going to need 140-150hp to be in with a shout of that sub 18s pass.

What's that look like with a type 1?
2276cc with dells and a fruity exhaust?

  13. This is exactly what I need Paul - thanks.

Am I in the right ball park with 2276?

  14. You are indeed...

You can do it with less, but you need to factor in stripped down/out, plus smaller than stock rear tires on a 1600 box.. This will give you more acceleration, but less top speed... But for a 1/4 mile race, this is ideal!!

I've got a ticket for a 17.65 second pass on my 2270 in a sunroof micro bus, running a 2l box and bigger than stock rear tires...

  15. Ok - I'm running 185-65-15 on the back so I'm half way there ......

    Thanks for your help

Get some really weeny wheels and tyres and take it there with the engine you've got.

  17. I got a 17,62 run in my old camper. 124 bhp. 2056ccm 003 gearbox. 15.91 in present camper, 151 bhp 2366ccm 091 gearbox
Calculator says 13,93 with the bhp i got in Losen, so guess poor driving is the reason why i only got 14,18 out of it
