  1. Poop.. sold a 1700 short motor in Sept...thought the pots were a different size so case would be different...

Unless you have the time, lots of money and the tools to lean how to rebuild a engine.

I would be tempted to throw it back together and exchange it for a recon motor

  3. What he said.

  4. Chances are if you get a newer case by the time you have added a new cam and followers ,new bearings ,gaskets barrels and Pistons , refurbed the heads your in the realms of a complete rebuild ......weld it , leave the cam and everything else and it'll be fine ....@chrisradioman welded his there

  5. I have a case that is from what I can remember good in the important places. Some tit (I presume) tried to prise the 2 halves apart at the top where the breather box sits. You would need to cut the bit off yours and get it welded. Probably a safer option than thread repair ?? Its free plus post if you want. I will get pics tomorrow as I am currently on a ferry heading north :)

  6. Ta.. very kind.. I'll have to consider best options over Christmas I think..

    You have two optiions really.
Drill through the case and fit a longer bolt with dowty washers, slap it back together as is.
Full rebuild (which personally I wouldn't want to start by welding a case).
Once you start replacing parts, as LHU says, there's no stopping.

  8. Does this bolt do any holding together duties or is it just for oil pick up support? I think that m leaning towards the stud tapped into the case with a hole drilled for support at the other end... Reduces leakage points??.. Would still need a new pick up from Mick ... Maybe bearing replacement to try and get a bit more life? It's not a daily driver.. Or won't be if we ever finish..

I've no idea how much meat there is for that, but if you went through, there's always nut and bolt. :)

  12. Ta ...nice thread....Don't think my Clarke 135 or skills will be up to that welding.. It being magnesium alloy and all...So stud or bolt it is.. Looks like there's a whole lot of case left to drill a socket into so promising..
She'll never be a showgirl, so long as she makes it round each trip we'll be happy

  13. Pretty sure type 4 cases are not mag alloy.

  14. Yep, I think type 1's are magnesium alloy and type 4's aluminium.
    Though I could be wrong:thinking:

  15. OK .....me or me mig probably not up welding aluminium alloy either

  16. No but some one will be able to

  17. Wait for my pics of my case mate, it is an inch or so off the corner where the breather box sits, its a n easy fix. Pics here tomoz, no structural issues that I can think of.

  18. Thought it might involve the mating faces which is beyond me...I'm new to all this...

  20. I'm all for a bit of bodging but really... having been back into the shed for a bit more of a look I've figured out the 'fix' previously done for cracking the case....

Lugs you can see on pick up above are to hold it off the case to let oil under. Nut on outside pulled it into place by the stud coming out of the pick up (the one i snapped) through plate on outside.

The hole the bolt went through on the side of the case has a bolt hammered/ glued in place blocking the hole.. Not tightened in place no room to fit even a thin walled socket over it.. Not looking good for my plan to put a long stud through there..!

Might be welding Mick's case in the new year.. Aluminium hard to work with..?
... Could always glue it.. Being non structural and all
