Type 4 Oil Pump - new thing to worry over...

  1. Not really a question just a warning.

I was wondering what caused this trauma to rivets on the old cam..

I know new bolted cams can foul on the nuts/bolts on back of pump which is why you need a bit machining off the face, but this was the original riveted one.

I was checking clearance on the new one when I noticed the pin holding the pump cog had pushed out..

If you have your oil pump out off a type 4 worth checking.

Think it's the oil pressure in the pump pushes it out like a hydraulic piston!

You can just hammer it back and peen the case to hold it like they recommend in type 1 pumps..

  2. There is a guy on the Samba who reconditions used Type 4 pumps. He drills a hole through the pump boss and shaft and pins it in place. I’m surprised this happens but it does. I cleaned up an old pump with lapping and it took a big-ass shop press to push that shaft out and set it in again.

You were lucky...That could have been so much worse. I bet you had to split the case anyway.

Well yes, I can see the cam bearings sitting there...

  3. Hopefully that peening will do the job!

Could have been bad if I hadn't seen the back of another pump and just machined the cam gear to make more clearance. Don't think it would have been long before it pushed out again

... might do some more peening just in case ....

  4. I also have read the issue of that shaft being pressed out. The pumps I looked at had been peened over. However, I did the following for a belt and braces approach.

    Hope this helps.
