Type 4 Exhaust Solution

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Mending, Feb 10, 2014.

  1. Hi

I'm having a Turnkey (125 HP) Type 4 engine installed in my 1975 bus - and need suggestions on what exhaust system to chose.

Exhaust should be 1-½" (38 mm) with a classic (not sporty) sound and not too visible.

Will that be a complete header or a pair of J-tubes with a fitting muffler?

Please post ideas along with photos and links.

    Thanks

  2. And so begins another vintage speed recommendation thread:)

Try searching for Vintage Speed. It's been discussed very recently.

  5. first question is how much are you prepared to pay...Turbo Thomas do a hide away in stainless but you're not getting much change from £800

I have an old pattern 304 stainless on my Type 1 engine, which I bought from Bluebird Customs....it fitted perfectly, and sounds reasonably quiet....hard to fault.

Pipe of the month appears to be vintage speed.....get good reviews

  6. The price is not that important. Most sound tests I've heard of various custom exhausts sounds nothing like a VW. That's a shame.
What would be the best and most classic sounding (and looking) solution that at the same time gets the most performance out of the engine?

I've seen photos af the hide away from Turbo Thomas. Looks too exaggerated.

Does anyone know if these are 1-½" (38 mm) ?

  7. what mods have you done to the engine ?

  8. @holmsen what do you mean (or need to know) ?

  9. Think hes interested in what modifications you are having made to your engine for it to achieve 125 bhp.

  11. stock exhaust on a new stock 1800 engine fitted with a centre mount twin barrel carb

Vintage speed superflow on the same engine, but now with twin dells and big k+n's so there is also a louder induction noise

Same exhaust, different engine, now on a 914 1700 engine

If you're looking for a stock 'beetle' engine sound i don't think you get that from a VS exhaust as its got a sportier sound, but its a superb bit of kit and unmistakably flat four
    :)

  12. None of the aftermarket exhausts will sound "like a VW". The classic "blatt-blatt" noise comes from the unequal-length pipes in the stock exhaust, which won't be there in an aftermarket unit.

  13. Thanks for all the input!

So if we are talking stand-alone J-tubes 1-½" (38 mm) Type 4 engine (VW Bus 1975) which of the following would be recommended? And have I overlooked any in my research?

    1. Vintage Speed
    2. Turbo Thomas
    3. European Motorworks

  14. @vanorak : The link doesn't work...

  15. Stateside j tubes
