Type 4 exhaust question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grub, Jun 11, 2019.

  1. Hi all,
Just bought a used exhaust muffler for my type 4 engine as I have a blow on mine.
One of the studs that hold the exhaust on (there are 3 either side) is a bit rusty and there is no proper thread left on it.
Question is..can I remove this and replace..is there a thread inside the flange so the stud will unscrew?
    Thx

  2. You would expect it to be a threaded stud. If it’s stripped I don’t see an issue with trying to remove it.

  3. yes they are threaded ,I just replace with a grub screw

  4. Many thanks..did yours come out ok.. mine look very rusted in!

  5. They can be tricky to get out, I ended up drilling one. ONce you have a clean thread you can use a bolt from the back of the heat exchanger flange if you prefer.

  6. some did ,some I drilled out .....

  7. Thanx for the replies guys..I will have a trial fit and see how badly the threads at stripped.
    Cheers
