Type 4 Engine (CJ) - Looking for an experienced tuner in S.Wales area

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by woollywelshbloke, Jan 3, 2020.

  1. Hi LBers!

I have a Type 4 CJ 2.0lt engine which has served me well over the last few years but on a recent run it kept dying at low revs.

It has a single weber carb, electronic ignition and full tinwear set up and was dropped and had all new seals a few years ago. Basically i think its in good nick but I'd like to be absolutely tip top for a run around Ireland in a few months.

I'm after either 1) local garage which specialises in aircooled or 2) someone with all the gear to come to the house and check everything over and 'tune' it all up properly.

Video of my van is here (apologies for the music, its an old vid!!) but you can hear the engine running from about 2m10s.

If you're in my area get in touch - I work away a lot so we can hopefully find a date that works.

You might be better finding someone that knows Weber’s to try to get a single carb to work on a type 4. Mosley’s Garage, Llandeilo seem to have a good reputation.

Its the carburettor. Sell it to somebody optimistic and buy dual ICTs or better.
Dont waste your money on tuning that carb on top of a nice 2.0.
Its going to have to be sooty rich : the dying is icing and/or fuel condensation.
There is insufficient hot air and manifold heating in that crude lashup.

  5. If you can afford them, dual dell 40's seem to work well

The progressive needs air fed at 30 degrees C with heated manifold inlet runners. Just like the stock Type 1 Solex 34PICT-3. In California its usually hot enough for the Weber 32/36 to work.
On a Type 4 engine it needs a lot of fabrication messing with oil heating the manifold and fitting a cover over the air filter that pulls in warmer air.
    There are more productive approaches.

On a T1 you already have the right parts so adding a progressive carb that works on cold days can be a success.

  7. I have the exact same carb, when its cold its runs like a utter pig, i always let it warm up a little before driving and just keep on the throttle a little bit while still warming up, once warm its bob on.

but mikedjames has hit the nail on the head.

You do know that there is a throttle endstop screw for when the choke is on, behind the choke heater element. So you can set a cold throttle and then it backs off as the choke element heats up until it uses the endstop on the main throttle shaft. Like the main throtttle adjuster this is extremely sensitive.

  9. Bump.

Been looking at dual carbs for a while but bit out of my price range at this time - but on the 'Treat myself' list for sure!

To bring it back around to the original question, does anyone know who can help me set up my engine (in its current state) who is in the South Wales(ish) area?

As a few people have said a T4 with a single Weber has actually been pretty good but I think a bit of looking at by a pro would help it along.

    As I said earlier, Mosley’s https://all-opening-hours.co.uk/0637591/Mosley's_Rolling_Road_&_Garage_Services.

They’re in South Wales, they know Weber carbs and work on Bays. Although I have no direct experience, they have a good reputation on various forums.
