Type 4 dipstick tube

    I’m sure someone will know this..
    Is the dipstick tube a press-fit in the housing?
    Had a short 1.8 AP engine built and fitted with my 1.7 ancillaries and was puzzled by the high oil level - like around double the max mark on my stock dipstick. Looking at old posts here it seems they normally protrude around 55mm whereas my weener is only a pathetic 30mm from the alternator tin.
    I even pumped out the oil to check it wasn’t overfilled or diluted with petrol and got 3 litres out which seems right to me, so I assume my shroud was refitted and the tube took a whack in the process so the stick is going in more than it should.
    Can’t say I ever noticed how long it was before!

  2. Yep around 55mm is correct, they must be pressed in I guess Steel in Ali ?

    Just thinking out loud, maybe they only had a type 1 dipstick so cut down the tube ? I dont think I have a type 1 dipstick to measure here. Plenty of type 4 !!!

    Thanks for the reply - actually the first question I asked was whether a type 1 stick was used but no. And they’re so much shorter it would have barely touched the tip.
    Clearly they put the right amount in and probably never looked at the stick - no need,
    Asides which it had my correctly marked sender stick (which also somehow got mangled, but I think I know how) so perhaps assumed it was wrong if they had.

    I was just wondering how the tube got shorter so assumed must be a press fit. As you point out it’s steel so it must be. I’m not going to try pulling it out myself to find out though, knowing me I’ll be left holding it unattached to anything

    Maybe the stick bending occurrence happened at the same time...?
