Im in a position to think about carburettors for the type 4 Im building.

    Spec
    1911 cc with stock camshaft.

I have a pair of brand new Solex 36mm carbs/manifolds for a type 4 (2.0) which I could fit however talking to Clive, he has a pair of Weber 40 IDF's (28mm venturis) fitted to his 2056 type 4.

Would these be suitable for the 1911 Im building? Or are the Solex carbs good enough

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

I think it makes no sense to fit huge carbs then choke them right down... but that's what I've done too and about to choke down again from 30 to 28's to see what happens. It'll happily rev off the rev counter (6500-7000) with 30's and similar valve sizes to yours so I think there's room for manouvre.

    The heads I've got haven't got particularly large valves, 39.3 x 33

This one isn't gonna be an out and out stormer, I'm looking for throttle response on the button and drive ability.

  4. Second hand megasquirt / microsquirt setup .?????

Dells have always been my first choice either 36 or 40 's.

  5. I have a 1911 built from @Majorhangover's old 1800, it has a pair of 40mm Solex on it and runs just fine.
I too over carbed my 2056 and now wish I'd gone smaller.

  7. My 1911 has an uprated cam and head work, plus the bigger valve 1800 cc heads. It's got twin 40 DCNFs I bought used, no idea on the choke size. I don't know if it's the cam or the carb set up / vents, but it's definitely OTT as the torque / power curves are pretty steep. Also got longer ratios in the box. Driving empty it bowls along nicely, but load it up and show it a hill and it drops off fast below 3k rpm. Very fluffy below 2k rpm as well, and a pig to start when it's really cold. I really want to get FI, but need to save up for that and don't want to spend money messing about with the current set up that I could put towards FI.

Personally, I would fit what you've got or spend a more for FI rather than twin 40s.

  8. I still need to do a rolling road session at JPM to dial in these 40 idf's but so far so good,it easily holds 110kmh on the motorway, some of the big hills i need full throttle.
I fitted a VDO oil temp in the sump today and went out for a blast, sat mostly around 80 but if i was aggressive it went up to the low 90's.
I have no idea of how much a difference its going to make to get it dyno'd?
Does anyone know of what jets the Weber carbs come with brand new?
I will post my results and jet sizes once the dyno is done to help you out @MorkC68.

  9. I am so not an expert on these things but have a type 4 1800 with twin IDF 40s and a vintage speed exhaust. No idea on venturi size or jets but mine will pull smoothly from sub 2000 rpm and on to a self imposed 5k rpm very easily. We just had a fab week in Scotland and the Lakes very fully loaded - we are talking westy berlin with a tow-bar bike rack with 4 bikes, four people, luggage and roof bars and a fully loaded roof box and we did several of the big lakeland passes easily. OK I was in first gear going up the 25% bits but I wasn't far away from being able to do it in 2nd. To be fair I decided not to try Hardnott but even so I was well pleased.

  11. Here is our bus Myrtle headed over from Buttermere back to Keswick (which has some pretty steep bits) and also having just done a lap of Langdale and thinking better of trying Hardknott (check out warning of doom sign in the background!)

  13. Looks cool! Have you got an oil temp guage?....

  14. By the way, I have CHT, oil temp and oil pressure gauges and Myrtle was cool as a cucumber over the whole thing

  15. Tell me about your oil temp guage and where the sender is located,is it a VDO guage and sender?

  16. I've just fitted a taco plate sender.

    So easy to fit!

I'm gonna do a thread later about it.
