Type 4 Camshaft recommendations

  1. Deefer66 i am loving your type 4 rebuild thread. Well done that man. How is the engine performing? Is it still running sweet. Was there anything you would have done differently?

  2. Cheers glad it might be of help... tried to copy references in case they'd come in useful.

She still runs fine, had a blip after a tour of the south coast where she behaved impeccably and stated and ran spot on everytime, but think we had an electrical issue somewhere so just done a "relay everything at the back end " installation which seems to be working.

Std 2.0ltr ,stock twin carbs and pulls fine and cruises motorways at 60 pretty much regardless which if I'm honest is about as fast as I'd like to go in a big square box!

Not sure if theres a huge benefit to swivel rocker feet especially on the bother with 10mm studs or the solid shaft spacer but not caused me no issue either and was fun.

Might have gone down the sleeved guides for valves rather than replace if I knew about that option as that caused me some pain first go... easy peasy second time though..

Triple check oil seals on cranks when they go in..think we have a small leak there.

If you bench run first fix it to the gearbox... made a world of difference holding the starter spot on rather than where a yoke thought it should be.

Good luck with yours... I am always surprised it works, having never done it before, that it's still going but it was broke before I started so no biggie if it breaks again...

  3. Thanks for the update and glad it’s still performing well. I have done the swivel foot conversion on the 1.8 motor thats in the bus at the moment. I think they are a bit kinder to the valve heads but i do worry about the outcome if one snaps off. I recon I will swap them onto the new build though.
Do you think the Scat cam & lifters was a better choice than the std cam & followers from such as VW Heritage?
Won’t have the opportunity to bench test before installing so fingers crossed. It will be a while in the making as it is a winter project.

Swivel foot adjusting screws are kinder on the valve stems especially if you have a cam with more lift than standard and solid spacers prevent the rockers walking along the shaft and falling off the valve – a problem with hydraulic cams because the follower is always in contact with the cam and can’t spring back into position. Both modifications are worthwhile upgrades IMO.

  5. 1800 feet (8mm) won't go onto 2.0 rockers (10mm) I had to get MY feet from a nice man in Germany who makes em...but the whole rocker assembly can go over and keep the 8mm ones where swivel feet are easier to find. I think geometry is the same if you're going ratio rockers I wouldn't know.

I stuck to Webcams std bus grind as I don't know any better and didn't want the knock on effect of what else would need changing.. it's a bus after all and a stock 2ltr keeps me going fast enough to be happy I can stop or get back under control going past a gate opening on a windy day

1800 feet should go into 2.0l rockers, 1700 rockers have 8 mm adjusters, 1800 and 2.0l have 10 mm. Ratio is 1.3:1 for all type 4 rockers, inlet and exhaust.

Hours of reading here about 10mm swivel foot adjusters, including a couple of post from me: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=643049

Swivel foot adjusters are available from TP Technologie in Germany. http://www.tp-technologie.de/produkte ventileinstellsch en.htm

  8. So a question. If the 1.8 rockers are the same ratio as the 2.0 and the pushrods are the same length i am a bit puzzled as the 2.0 has a longer stroke so the cylinders are taller by 2.5mm i presume. Where is that extra made up in the valve train?

The cylinders are the same length but the gudgeon (or wrist) pin is higher in the piston on the 2.0l so TDC is at the same height but BDC is lower. The extra stroke is at the bottom of the cylinder but the piston is shorter so it doesn’t stick out the bottom.
The distance between the cam and the rocker is the same for 1700, 1800 and 2.0l.

This is the piston for my 80mm stroke 2,316cc engine, the pin actually breaks into the oil control ring groove.

  12. Ah yes... 1700 rockers not 1800.... it's been a while I should check before posting duff... good job it wasn't on Samba I'd have been well and truly flogged and made to stand in a corner for that.. Thorsten's the nice man yes.. refunded me super quick when I paid him twice by mistake. Two years and 7k on them and seem to be holding good for me..

  13. I am swaying toward the idea of the Scat C25 cam as you used. The Scat followers seem to be available. Are there any type 4 heavy duty valve springs available in the UK? I don’t want to have to get the heads machined to fit them. Or did you get away with std springs?

I bought single HD springs from Stateside, no machining required. If you use standard springs make sure they aren’t coil bound at full lift.

Only if all the other elements of the engine are exactly in tune with the cam.
