So condition as per the pics and note the spacing measurements in the pics for fitting .
Sold as seen and want £140.00 for the pair.
Located for pick up in Luton and can post at your cost. Boxed weight is 20kg.

  2. I didn't realise there were different spacing for this type. Got me worried now that the ones I bought a few months ago won't fit.

Please would you tell me what the sticky out bit with two studs is on the right hand one?

There isn’t. All type 4 engines, VW or Porsche, 1700, 1800 or 2.0l have the same exhaust port spacing. The only difference between heads is the square and oval port but the spacing is the same.

  7. Phew. That's what I thought but was worried reading the OP that the ones I bought recently might not fit.

I‘ve just measured the exhaust stud spacing on a couple of VW 1800 heads; 176.5mm outboard and 182.5mm inboard, give or take a mm. Those^ heads look correct to me, unless the flanges are twisted.

Looks like they are original ones going from the thin fins on the inside ....but beware , if the foil and matting is in there which i think there is .....it's asbestos .
Split the casing open and get it out and re crimp up as they are still better than new repro's

Just done the same. Is there a suitable replacement for the asbestos matting and wire mesh that you could recommend?

Probably best just leaving it without anything like the new ones ....they will still be better than new because of the longer fins catching more heat .
the new ones hardly have any fins . I think Dicky did some alternative to the asbo .

What ever you use, you have to make sure it is capable of not disintegrating under the heat passing by .

The old stuff has all but disintegrated anyway so isn't of much use. I'm completely reinstating the original heating. I want to get the max out of it so am not sure that leaving it bare will be best. @Dicky what did you use?

You could put a thin steel casing or aluminium around the fins in two bits ...it's what you use in between that and the outer casing .

That is the bit you have to get right or you could have smells or the material breaking down and entering the cab .
It all depends if you are going to use it a lot in winter ....i don't much at all and have no material in the casing and it's ok for me .

Having said all that it still smells and unfortunately i don't use it much and just put a extra jumper on .....Shame, like you i have spent a lot of money on getting it right and must say am dissapointed in it .

I would like to put something inside as presumably it keeps the hx from cooling too quickly so you can get hot air to the front. I don't want to use fibreglass/rock wool as the fibres will end up being blown through. I was thinking of a fire blanket type material?

  15. The problem with any fire blanket or material like that is, if any oil leaks in you will never get rid of the smell.

Just make hinged flaps in the heat exchangers for servicing the mats ;), it’s so simple I’m
Surprised nobody has thought of it before :D

Wouldn't that be the case whatever material is used inside?

Not if you kept a constant eye out for oil leaks going on it i suppose

    Are they £120?
If you want to auction them, stick’em on eBay.

  20. They are posted on eBay already. I'm surprised that you guys are confirming that the spacings are correct as they defo did not fit in my replacement engine from heritage . We even slightly opened the holes and still no good. Had to buy new repro ones. Note that after nearly 3 years on i am still having overheat problems with this engine (120 to 130 C) and have tried everything to get the running temp down. Weber ict carbs rejetted and rolling road tuned by old school Peter Baldwin , timing checked and reset several times etc, it's been in the hands of Larry at Retro Customs near Baldock to troubleshoot and as a final act as are replacing my Power spark Bosch 034 electronic distributor with an overhauled original fit distributor to prove to heritage that it's their engine that has a problem. Let's see what the result is after the distributor change.
You can see my other tread on this long story for some light reading. Troubleshooting costs are now very high so reason why I am selling off the spares to fund.
