Dude i love this thread and your enthusiasm for the build I have the best intentions in my following words Is that oil cooler painted or powder coated? Ditch the chrome dress up kit as it will do you no favours On a plus note your welding is better than mine I love the fact your detailing the gearbox This is what i did to mine
Cheers dude, nice box. A few coats of HT paint What sort of problems does the chrome cause? TBH i wish i hadn't of went for it cos its a pig to keep clean and ive already put a few scrapes in it.
Twe-d I think chrome keeps the heat for longer periods were as black gets rid of it quicker. I only say this because i had heat issue's with my engine because of the chrome. The last owner had to rebuild the engine twice because of missing tin wear and he had chromed everything. I have gone black were I can and added tin and don't have heating issue's. I may be on the write tracks and some would say different, just sharing my knowledge my friend. Great work your doing and welcome.
Thanks @vdub brvs I can see your point with the heat retention. You've give me something to look out for. Guess its just gonna be a bit of suck it and see. Hopefully with not running heat X's it cools better than most, if not sure it's not too big a job to change in place.
I don't run the heat x's as well. You do some great workmanship, what's your main job. I would give you a job any day. I also have the transaparent dizzy caps
The chrome doesent dissipate heat as well as the standard black tinware Vw stipulated chrome rocker covers for artic conditions to help maintain the correct operating temperature for the engine Also that fan shroud you have doesent have the correct vanes inside and as such your engine will run hotter Id be worried about painting the oil cooler aswell as you may well be hindering its ability to dissipate heat from the oil to the air flow over it
@vdub brvs Thanks dude, Im a maintenance technician for Northern Ireland Railways All duly noted, I did have to bend the vanes slightly to match the old knackered shroud, ill hopefully get a chance to bench run the engine before fitting and if its running too hot ill ditch the chrome and clean the cooler. cheers
nice work there buddy, the engine detailing is great, and your welding is really good for a first time too!
Bit more.... The gearbox is cleaned up ready for paint. Removed rear suspension, didn't fancy swinging on the hub nut in the garage also most bolts on the stubby side of the drive shafts were seized solid so i cut the brake pipe, unscrewed the handbrake cable and removed the lot. Much easier on the bench with the buzz gun and a bit of heat Cleaned up Press out the stubby T/A bush Shot blast Skim off inside of hub New bush
The chassis legs Bottom inch or so was rot so i cut out parts to make templets Then bend to shape Weld in, easy as that ............... Hours and hours of Bought a torsion tube repair kit off ebay and tho its a bit pricey the fit is pretty much spot on getting there
Update time. Still grafting away at my bus trying to avoid distractions (Sunshine, Beer, Sports) plus I've been told I have 2 months to get her out of the garage!! Nothing like a good old deadline Eh, Anyway pictures I was hoping to save the tubs but the PO had left them in a terrible state, time and effort to repair was too much so I decided just to change them. Started Removing all the old underseal...... Pig of a job Wire brush in the drill And this weapon Steamer and Degreaser for the rest Pics dont do it justice New tubs in.
Inner D posts, I cut the weld of one to get the curve One piece for both sides This tailgate trim has seen better days Rust treated the inside Pain in the @rse to line up but got there in the end.
Removed the tinware to clean up got one side done before the shot blaster broke. inner hinge pannel Rear end primed Smoothed spring plates Where I'm at now
Great job Tre-d, great detail as well. Keep up the great work, you have next year to enjoy the sun/bear/sports and driving your bus
