Looking to get a towbar fitted to our 77 Deluxe which has a 2ltr type 4 engine and exhaust. What options are out there? I see Autocraft do them for all bay buses with Type 1 engine, but nothing for type 4s. Any ideas? Cheers Deano
Westfalia swan neck, replaced rear bumper mounts and sits behind the bumper and looks factory Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
It doesn't matter what the motor is, a tow bar is a tow bar for a bay. As pkrboo said, a westy one. We use the JK/Watling one on our westy and a home built one on our kombi, they both work with either type 1 or type 4 motors.
Oh ok, just on the autocraft website and they're saying 1600cc engines only! Thought it was odd!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I guess on the JK website they say standard exhaust they mean a stock exhaust as opposed to a VS one or something like that http://www.justkampers.com/vw-t2-ba...w-t2-bay-with-standard-exhaust-1972-1979.html Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
with my type 4 engine (1971/2 cross over) the exhaust used to sit really close to a tow bar just like this.
Mine's also like this (79). I had to adjust the holes where it bolts to the chassis and also bang a dent in the silencer to avoid direct metal to metal contact.
Same towbar although fitted a little differently. Went straight on and clears my after market silencer. My bumper is fitted much closer too so means i can fit ball further up.
I take that back.....its not the same tow bar. The drop section on mine is angled so clears the silencer by a good half inch. Im guessing yours wouldnt fit with my xhaust.
To be clear... the one i have fitted is the JK one and it clears the silencer. Not sure what others have fitted as they look similar but im guessing are an older model and the newer ones have been modded to suit!
One of these https://www.vwheritage.com/ac251606-silencer-stainless-steel-with-2x3-tail-pipes-1700-2000cc Its actually fatter than a standard one too!
Mine comes straight down and the bumper was further out due to not being an aftermarket one with silly brackets inside. No longer a problem for me since I went Subaru.
Yep, thats the one thats on mine. Its a splitty one i believe. Yours is probably an actual xover one.
I have the Justkampers / Watling tow bar and a Vintage Speed exhaust on a 2.0L type 4 so it does fit, albeit quite close with a 5 to 10mm clearance. (this pic was taken when fitting it and hasn't got the tow ball fitted)
Hi, resurrecting an old post as I'm looking to fit a towbar to an 1974 with 1800 type 4.. Does the JK towbar alter the position of the bumper at all? Looks like it might move the bumper down a bit.. Thanks, Stuart
