Tinware

  1. Powder coat or paint? I am taking it all off this week and going to tidy up the engine bay. I am thinking that powder coat will give a longer lasting finish but paint means more choice on colours.
It's a 2.0 so I was wondering about the fan housing. Is this suitable for powder coating?
    Any thoughts / ideas welcome

  2. I'm having mine powder coated as it should give a better finish for longer, mines a 1600 so can't help on the fan housing

i had mine bead blasted then polished it an dulled it back down with scothc pads to try tomake it look original, looks pretty good, powdercoating or painting fine for it though.

  4. i got mine powder coated, the finish is great

  5. i painted mine, it was good enough 40 yrs ago.. (on my beetle that is)

  10. right, found someone that will do all the tinware and fan housing for £20 in pretty much any colour i want
as that is stupidly cheap, are there any other parts suitable for powder coating? maybe steering column or pedals? any ideas?

I had all my tins done satin black along with the firewall, the casing is metallic candy apple red

  13. and here is one I did earlier. See what I mean about blanking off the back of the casing so it doesn't get coated. The issue here is that if this gets coated the fan will foul it. So you then have to put spacers/shims behind the fan so that it sits slightly proud. Not a major issue if its not too thick, but if it is too thick you run the risk of shagging the bearings on your alternator as the fan belt doesn't sit quite true.

  14. cool, thanks Joker. the guy doing it is my mates dad. he said the oven they use is the size of a room so it will just go in with the other stuff, hence the price.
when i get it done i will ask if he is willing to do some more for you.

  16. Righ, it's all off and ready to be done. The tinware will be black but I don't know what colour to do the fan housing. Any suggestions?
This is what it's like now

  17. depends on what colours you want and whether you want it to match or contrast with the body. I went bright on mine because I have a white van, so any colour would do, but yours is green so you should choose wisely.

Take a look at my engine build thread on the samba - I took pics from the forum as my inspiration
