  1. reading glasses, alarm clock, 'phone, ipod...little led light let into the top....I can see it now....his n' hers:thumbsup:

  2. I
    its a plan!

  3. how about some glass shelves and a range of miniatures?:D

  4. Go to bed your getting giddy!

  5. you b'aint wrong....Schlafen sie gut!

  6. Wondering whether either mains unit or something of equal annoyance would fit in there. Nice and accessible!

  7. Tonights efforts were limited to fitting the steel to the facia. Bolted it on as dont do woodscrews anymore. Not in the van anyway!

  8. Hasnt gone entirely to plan as the top of the board on the rear shelf is about 10 to 15 mm higher than the bed boards. Will fit thinner foam on the shelf or add some depthe to the seat cusions - but not too much or it might not work. Also need to get it properly bolted in as its moving around. Cant do that till the weldings done. Not to worry its as near as damn it. Need to suss out upholstery now!

  9. you may have done yourself a favour there....if you're upholstering direct to the boards, use another 12mm board and bolt thru with T nuts....removeable seat tops:thumbsup:

  10. Not enough depth on the hinges to accomodate that Im afraid. Btw the depth of the opening is 2 inches - so not a fantastic amount of space there Im afraid. Wouldnt mind a couple of flip out ashtray type things for putting stuff in. Possibly 12 volt socket and jack plug socket wired up to stereo would be good.

Going to re-make the backrest I think. Bit too short - needs another 25mm so it sits better at the back. You researched foam for yours yet. As Ive said elsewhere I gas going to cut and glue to give the xtra width but might just go for it and get new! Mine was supposed to be a medium density its a bluey grey colour (I think - need to look in the daytime!

That's a piece of work chap! Quality wood working.
Hopefully you can get down to help me sort mine out...;)
Looking forward to seeing your foam solution.

  12. Aye - nearly got it right!!. You got a tame upholsterer in mind to do your covers? Going to suss out the foam some-time soon but i dont think mines as comfy as it could be but Im not sure why tbh. Dont know ehther its purely the depth, the firmness or whether, as discussed previouly I need a laminate of differing grades. Difficult thing to get right as its not as if you can really try it out anywhere.

Yeah, plenty of upholsterers round here it seems. Duresta is up the road in Long Eaton & just about everyone seems to have worked there at some time;)
As you know, the bed is a real issue for us too so this thread is ace:thumbsup:
Foam's expensive. I'm sure a few years ago we went to some foam cutter in Caenby Corner, or some other distant outpost of the old empire, & actually had a discussion with the dudes that cut it.

  14. I see...there's got to be another way round it....

  15. I want to get it done by the time my bus is back home weekend after next tbh - even if I do a temp job for now as want to get furniture sussed out!

  16. Think Ive sussed it. Easiest way by far is to simply lift the whole thing up by the required amount if necessary. New metal to be put on arches so will be easy to modify as spacers are already required. Can fit some spacers under the shelf brackets too if necessary.

That sounds like a plan. It seems to me that the hardest thing is to get the height exactly right. I think the OG Westy bed base sat directly on the floor & it looks like you are going over the top of phenolic trailer board from the pics? That would throw the wheel arch bolts out a bit?

  18. you are spot on there. Intend to drill the arches - stress plate on the back, bolt up through the arch -hd washer and nut - through the bed bracket and a nyloc and washer above. - thats the plan anyway. Not sure what the dimesions will be when i get it back.

  19. great write up mate......reminds me I've got to start mine soon!!

    couple of questions....

do you need to fix a battern or wood or a support to the fire wall to support the rear of the bed?

...I was wondering if you can get away with making the bed a little wider so you dont need arm rests?

which is the best order to start building it all to get all the wood in the right places?

  20. with these particular hinges the firewall ie engine top supports the back of the bed - provided you make it tall enough. Will take a pic and post it as Ive done mine a bit too short so may redo it. If you make it wider then it may foul the sides of the van when you put it into sofa mode. The fix for that is to profile the sides so they miss (will do a pic to demonstarate)

If you are mocking up the bed and trying to get the dimensions then rather than have your head explode then best to make up the two sides that thr R+R hinges attach to. Screw a length of timber through the holes in the hinges that the bed board would be screwed through (ie through both of the plates, if you then put another screw through the batten through the hole that fits the hinge to the rear shelf over the engine bay. This way you can
    1. identify its level with the rear shelf
2, work out the size of your bed boards
    3. mark out the hinge - hole positions in the side panels

If none of the above makes sense then let me know.
