Nice day today so attacked sprucing up the front callipers ready for when the refurb kit arrives next week.

One of the callipers was full of gunk:

Got it all cleaned out, scrubbed the callipers and a few coats of paint:

One side done, try and get the other one done tomorrow.

Also bought some stone chip and covered under the front and rear arches with the stuff:

So - need to get some body colour paint and can then get the underneath sprayed and the fun will then begin.

Productive day today but fought me all the way!

Thought I would look at the front hub/spindle/brakes and here we go.

So, the brake back guard is advertised as for 71 to 79 with minor drilling - great.

Used CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) to drill 3 new holes and here we are, all put together with the calliper put in just to make sure it all aligns well.

Took the caliper off and added the hub and disk and here we are:

Will fit the calliper repair kit tomorrow and then finish off by adding the torsion arms (just for testing obviously) :)

    Cheers

Finished fitting the new seals to the callipers and bolted to the hubs.

So - to see if anyone is following this thread (I now a few are…) the original colour of my van is Chianti Red but the PO has used a more modern VW colour - Tornado Red.

So, when spraying the underneath of the van should I go for the original colour or use the new colour??

Had a spare 30 minutes this evening so thought I would have a look at the seat rail.

Using CAD, created a seat template for the seat rails as the rail closest to the middle had not been disturbed - see pic below:

A few more pics of it loosely in position:

Need to straighten the rail, drill out the old spot welds, tidy it up and weld it on.

    Hopefully do it tomorrow morning.

    Cheers

Rail straightened, old spot welds drilled out and now welded back in:

    Welds ground back:

Seat mounted and no issues :)

Coat of paint added to protect etc:

Look at the passenger side next and see what I need to do to get this mounted.

Below is a picture of the old passenger side wheel tub - cut out the seat bracket (even though its not used in a Dormobile but will add it for completeness) and the bracket for the wheel jack:

Here they are all cleaned and ready to be put in (measured several times).

Will look to do this sometime this week.

Yesterday got everything out to weld the brackets to the wheel tub, helmet and gloves on. Pull the trigger and fizz - the weld was crap and straight away I new what it was - ran out of gas :(

Bought some gas today so removed the paint, added weld through primer and et voila, welded and the welds ground down.

A flash of primer and will eventually add some black:

New bolts and nuts bought so I can mount the seat to the wheel tub.

The more central holes already exist but the nearside holes don’t so had to drill through my new tubs - ouch:

And a view of the seat in - remember the cooker goes behind the passenger seat hence the seat being someway forward.

(Oh and the hole in the seat :()

    Quick question.

The tube for the clutch cable. Can anyone share the exact route. From the rear I am OK but where should it exit at the front?

    A picture:

The is from front to back (right hand drive van) so electric cable on the left?

    From the rear.

Clutch cable tube in this picture put in roughly and in the centre.

Thanks for helping with my question :(

Tackled the clutch cable conduit. Fed through the chassis and welded in the bracket to the rear tube, then welded the tube to the bracket - finished with painting on Epoxy 121 to the tube and the welded bracket so all good:

Fully recovered from my long weekend at Creamfields (was awesome) so started to tackle a few areas so I could start adding paint to the underside.

Turned the bolts around that hold one half of the passenger seat in and then cut them a bit shorter.

Also used nuts and bolts to secure the metal that is used to prop up the cooker. All nuts and bolts are stainless steel so should be good.

A couple of pics. The bolts/nuts for the seat:

    The cooker metal thingy:

    And from underneath:

Also went around the underneath adding seam sealer to areas that will need it before the final coat of paint - won’t bother showing pictures as not really exciting ;)

Decided today to add some red paint - should have been simple.

Get the air gun out, mix some paint with thinners. Connect to the airline, start the compressor and start to spray.

    Didn’t work :(

When I last used my gun I didn’t clean it thoroughly enough so it wouldn’t suck the paint up so started to brush on the paint - doh !!!

Managed to do the front arches and most of the front cab area (underneath) before it got to dark to carry on.

Before doing the painting, added some more stone chip to areas I had seam sealed and also to the areas I couldn’t get to due to the location of the axle stands:

  13. looking good a coat of fresh paint makes all the difference

  14. It does and thanks

Bought a new spray gun and managed to do most of the rear (underneath) but then the gun stopped pulling paint in.

Discovered that the pipe for sucking up the paint had broken at the top (after an hour of trying to work out what the hell was going on…..)

Got it swapped with no quibble (for the same type), then my compressor started to play up (100 litre, 3HP) so pulled out my trusty 50 litre one.

Then, this new gun also stopped sucking up the paint……..

Same issue - then realised what had happened - I was using my old paint cup and noticed it was about 5 or so millimetres shorter so when I was closing the lid is was bending the tube…...double DOH!!

Made a temporary fix and managed to get more done.

Will finish the rest by brush :(

    A couple of pics:

Hope to start adding the rear suspension soon.

Am I sick of painting under the van on my back or what…….

    But all done :)

Just have to let it dry fully then can start to install the suspension and the brake lines - hurrah.

A few pics of the finished article.

Looks like my 100 litre compressor is goosed - will have to pull it apart and work out what’s the matter with it :(
