  1. I did for painting (after putting the first coat on and finding out that they come off fully :)
    Like your colour choice.

Someone ages ago reminded me that when I put the engine back together that I had forgotten to put the air deflector plates back - so I have done it tonight ;)

    Just about visible!

Also added paint to the other side of the rear tinware:

Not much done tonight but still moving forward :)

    Cheers

Having been told that it would be better to change the push rod tunes the other way around as it will help to reduce the chance of oil leaks, this is what I did:

    After:

Trial fitted some of the tinware:

Not happy with the red so going to change it black to match the rest of the tin ware - worth a try!!

Then spent some time working on the pedal tray that I have - may try and finish it tomorrow.

    Cheers

Busy month with work and family stuff so van work dried up :(

Last week I painted a few bits, the pedal pan and also the tinware from under the pulley which I had painted in red but decided I didn't like it so painted it black.
    A few photo's

Today I replaced one of the gaiters off of one of the steering arms as it was past its sell-by date.
Used the part bought from VWH and seems to be good quality.
Having stripped off the the original one as seen below, I cleaned out some of the old grease:

Having repacked with fresh grease, the new boot and retaining clips were added and all good:

Also, sometime ago was given a metal holder for the thermostat so added some paint - the one of my van I have painted red but decided I didn't like it so this will be used instead:

Here is the tinware in place - looks better already :)

That's all for now - oh, just remembered, the rear brake compensator valve thingy that had a stuck bolt. Took my car for it's MOT last week and asked if they would do the honours, which they did so all good :)

    Cheers

  7. Thanks and the same to you and yours.:thumbsup:

  8. Big fail today - thought I would try and remove the bolt that is stuck in the chassis that holds the rear brake compensator to the chassis.

As it's flush with the chassis I drilled a small hole through the bolt then gradually made it bigger - all good.

Used one of those bits that you set the drill to reverse and it draws itself in and then should remove the bolt - nope [IMG]

Just pulled itself straight through so now had this bloody thing poking out.....

Might weld a piece of thick metal to it and see if I can use it as a lever to get enough leverage on it to get the bloody bolt out - after trying to get me release agent in.

    Oh the joys......

  9. Can I ask where you got the tie rod boots from.... I put some on last year and they have already split:mad:

  10. Those extractors rarely work.....
    Usually snap in situ..

  11. Think from VWheritage

  12. Had too try (learn the hard way)
Will prolly end up cutting it off and drilling again......

Try welding a bolt to what’s left. The heat from welding usually helps it break free.

  14. Was thinking that, but even when more of the bolt stuck out and I welded nuts to it - it still didn't budge.
If the weather holds out tomorrow will have another look.

  15. Crank the welder right up and get some proper heat into it.

  16. I did last time (honest guv')
Will probably give it another go as nothing to lose.

So, had another look at removing the remains of the bolt and thought I would weld the remains of the bolt extractor - guess what, the weld melted the stud extractor :)

So ground down the remains of the weld and had another go with the drill.

Managed to drill it out so will need to be retapped.

Questions - what size are the bolts used (think they are M8).

Also, the bolts will go through a couple of spacers, anyone know how long these need to be?

  18. Can’t believe it but actually found some time to do a bit of van work !!!

Decided to remove the tube that the clutch cable runs through as it is passed its best.

Below is the end where the cable would connect to the clutch mechanism in the bell end.

    And here’s the bugger removed.

Removed the remains of the bracket from the rear suspension tube that hold the clutch tube in place ready for me to knock a new one up - just need to get the tube first…..

Not a lot done today but better than nothing - will see if I can get an hour or two tomorrow and see what else I can do.
